COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 21, 2011) – USA Today named the U.S. Women’s National Team “Olympic Athletes of the Week” after it won the silver medal at the FIVB World Cup to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

The U.S. Women defeated Italy 25-23, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21 on Nov. 17 to gain the Olympic berth in the second-to-last day of the FIVB World Cup. Though the team was edged by Japan 29-27, 25-23, 25-18 in the final match, Team USA (9-2, 26 points) was able to punch its ticket to the Olympic Games as one of the top three teams of the FIVB World Cup gain qualification.

The silver-medal finish was the best placement ever in the FIVB World Cup for the U.S. Women, who had back-to-back bronze finishes in 2003 and 2007.

Adding to its week’s success, Team USA is ranked first in the world according to the FIVB following the conclusion of the FIVB World Cup. This milestone marks the first time in four years that the U.S. Women are ranked first over Brazil.

The U.S. Women finished the 2011 season with a 39-10 record, gold medals at the FIVB World Grand Prix and NORCECA Continental Championship, silver medal at the FIVB World Cup and bronze medals at the Pan American Cup and Pan American Games.
