COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 16, 2011) - The U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team charted its fourth win at the 2011 Parapan American Games on Wednesday, defeating Costa Rica, 25-11, 25-13, 25-11 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Team USA (4-0) outplayed Costa Rica (1-3) in all statistical categories, connecting on 34 kills to Costa Rica’s 11 and 10 service aces to Costa Rica’s one. In addition the U.S. held a 5-4 blocking ratio. The U.S. will finish round-robin play on Wednesday night (8 p.m. local time and CT, 6 p.m. PT) against Colombia (1-3) before seeds are announced for Thursday’s semifinal round.
Eric Duda (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Edmond, Okla.) led all scorers posting 12 points off of a team-high 10 kills and two aces. James Stuck (New Kensington, Pa./Edmond, Okla.) contributed 10 points with seven kills and a team-high three aces in addition to a team-high 10 digs. Daniel Regan (St. Louis, Mo./Edmond, Okla.) denied Costa Rica with a team-high three blocks and delivered three kills and a service ace for a match-total seven points.
Both Charlie Swearingen (Gulfport, Miss./Edmond, Okla.) and J. Dee Marinko (Newcastle, Okla.) earned six points with five kills and a block for Swearingen and four kills, one block and one ace for Marinko. Hugo Storer (Greensboro, N.C.) and team captain Brent Rasmussen (Omaha, Neb.) posted three points each from a pair of kills and a block off the hands of Storer and a pair of service aces and a kill from Rasmussen.
Edgardo Laforest (San Juan, Puerto Rico) gave Team USA two points off of two kills. Ed O’Neil (Amherst, Mass./Edmond, Okla.) was the team libero with seven digs and a team-high 12 excellent receptions.
The U.S. is currently in second place in the gold-medal count with 20 and is in third in total-medal winnings with 47 at the 2011 Parapan American Games. Brazil is leading both categories, 32-82.
