COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 17, 2011) – USA Red battled past its USA Blue counterpart 25-17, 27-29, 21-25, 26-24, 15-13 in an intrasquad scrimmage of the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Training Team held Thursday evening at Irvine Valley College in Irvine, Calif.
Juliann Faucette (San Diego, Calif.), who is training with the group only this week due to school commitments at University of Texas, turned in a match-high 20 points for USA Red with 15 kills on 34 attacks, four blocks and an ace. Ashley Benson (Bloomington, Ind.) contributed 10 kills on 20 attacks, a match-high seven aces and two blocks for 19 points. Kindra Carlson (Eaton, Colo.) contributed 15 points with 14 kills on 36 attacks and a block, while Dominique Olowolafe (Lansing, Mich.) pocketed 14 points with six kills, four aces and four blocks. Cassidy Lichtman (Poway, Calif.) collected 12 points with 11 kills and an ace. Jenna Hagglund (West Chester, Ohio) set USA Red to a 36 kill percent while scoring two aces and a block on her own ledger.
Becky Perry (Austin, Texas) led USA Blue with 18 points with 16 kills on a match-high 51 attacks, one ace and one block. Julianne Piggott (Newport Beach, Calif.) recorded 13 kills, two blocks and two aces for 17 points. Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) tacked on 15 points with eight kills, a match-high six blocks and an ace. Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn.) chipped in 13 points with eight kills on 16 swings, four blocks and an ace. Kaitlin Sather (Santa Rosa, Calif.) totaled eight kills and four aces for 12 points. Carli Lloyd (Bonsall, Calif.) set USA Blue to a 34 kill percent while adding three blocks and a kill.
U.S. Women’s National Team Assistant Coach Paula Weishoff, who served as USA Red’s head coach, started Hagglund at setter, Carlson at opposite, Benson and Olowolafe at middle blocker, and Faucette and Lichtman at outside hitter. Cami Croteau (Orange, Calif.) was the libero for first two sets, while Ellie Blankenship (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was the USA Red libero in the final two sets. Both shared the libero duties in the third set. Croteau held a 77 positive percent on 23 receptions, while Blankenship turned in a 60 positive percent. Lichtman handled a team-high 30 service receptions with a 77 positive percent and 70 excellent percent.
U.S. Women’s National Team Assistant Coach Karch Kiraly, who served as USA Blue’s head coach, started Lloyd at setter, Perry at opposite, Gibbemeyer and Johnson at middle blocker, and Sather and Pestolesi at outside hitter. Kayla Banwarth (Dubuque, Iowa) was the libero for USA Blue and provided a 62 positive percent on 26 service reception attempts. Sather compiled a 57 positive reception percent on a team-leading 37 attempts.
USA Red dominated the service battle with a 15-9 margin, despite committing 17 service errors to USA Blue’s 13. However, USA Blue held a narrow 16-12 advantage in blocks.
In the opening set, USA Red used a 9-5 push to take a 16-11 advantage at the second technical timeout before winning 25-17. USA Red held a 21-18 lead in the second set before USA Blue battled back for a 29-27 victory. USA Blue grabbed a four-point advantage at the second technical timeout of the third set, then maintained the four-point gap for a 25-21 victory. USA Blue was on the verge of the match victory with a 21-19 lead in the fourth before USA Red secured the 26-24 win. USA Red earned a 10-7 advantage in the final set and held on for a 15-13 victory.
On Wednesday night, the opposite result occurred as USA Blue won a tight five-set scrimmage (20-25, 25-19, 32-30, 16-25, 15-13). Both intrasquad scrimmages were open to the public.
Combining the two scrimmages on back-to-back nights, USA Blue was led by Gibbemeyer’s 39 points, followed by Perry’s 35 points. Sather added 29 points for the two nights. Carlson scored a two-night total of 38 points for USA Red, followed by Faucette’s 37 points and Benson’s 35 points.
The U.S. Women’s National Training Team, which started training Jan. 17, is nearing the conclusion of its winter training block at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim, Calif. The March 17 scrimmage marks the last event in the training block.
