COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 16, 2011) – USA Blue defeated its USA Red counterpart 20-25, 25-19, 32-30, 16-25, 15-13 in an intrasquad scrimmage of the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Training Team held Wednesday evening at Irvine, Calif.

For USA Blue, Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) scored a match-high 24 points with 19 kills on 36 attacks as part of a 53 kill percent. She added three aces and two blocks in the victory. Becky Perry (Austin, Texas) and Kaitlin Sather (Santa Rosa, Calif.) each contributed 17 points for USA Blue. Perry notched her total with 14 kills, two aces and a block. Sather pocketed 15 kills on a team-high 49 attacks and two aces. Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded 12 points, while Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn.) added 10 points. Carli Lloyd (Bonsall, Calif.) rounded out the scoring for USA Blue with five points while setting the team to a 37 kill percent.

Kindra Carlson (Eaton, Colo.) led USA Red with 20 kills on 36 attacks and three blocks for a total of 23 points. Juliann Faucette (San Diego, Calif.), who is training with the group during her spring break from University of Texas, added 16 kills on a team-high 53 attacks as part of a17-point performance. Ashley Benson (Bloomington, Ind.) chipped in 12 kills and a match-high four blocks for 16 points. Cassidy Lichtman (Poway, Calif.), who missed the U.S. exhibitions last month with the Japan Girls’ Youth National Team due to school commitments at Stanford, added 10 points, while Dominique Olowolafe (Lansing, Mich.) charted nine points. Jenna Hagglund (West Chester, Ohio) set USA Red to a 40 kill percent while adding five individual points.

U.S. Women’s National Team Assistant Coach Karch Kiraly, who served as USA Blue’s head coach, started Lloyd at setter, Perry at opposite, Gibbemeyer and Johnson at middle blocker, and Sather and Pestolesi at outside hitter. Kayla Banwarth (Dubuque, Iowa) was the libero for USA Blue and provided an 80 excellent percent on 30 service reception attempts.

U.S. Women’s National Team Assistant Coach Paula Weishoff, who served as USA Red’s head coach, started Hagglund at setter, Carlson at opposite, Benson and Olowolafe at middle blocker, and Faucette and Lichtman at outside hitter. Cami Croteau (Orange, Calif.) was the libero for first two sets, while Ellie Blankenship (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was the USA Red libero in the final three sets. Blankenship held a 73 positive percent on 22 receptions, while Croteau turned in a 69 positive percent.

In the deciding fifth set, USA Blue came back from a 12-11 deficit to win 15-13, scoring four of the last five points. USA Red held a 14-9 advantage in blocks for the match, but USA Blue made up the difference with a 9-3 margin in aces.

The two teams will hold a second scrimmage at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on March 17 at Irvine Valley College in Irvine, Calif.

The U.S. Women’s National Training Team is currently in its winter training block, which started Jan. 17 and runs through mid-April at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim, Calif.
