U.S. Men's Update: European Cups Continue

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 12, 2011) – Zenit Kazan, the Russian Super League team of U.S. setter Lloy Ball (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), won its pool in the main phase of the CEV Champions League.

Despite a five-set loss on Jan. 12 to France’s AS Cannes in its final pool match, Kazan won Pool A with a 4-2 record and will advance to the 12-team playoff.

In final pool play match, Cannes topped Kazan, 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 15-13). Ball started the match and scored four points. Priddy did not start, but entered the match in the fourth set and finished with eight points.

Olympiacos Piraeus, the Greek league team of Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) lost its final Championship League main phase match to Montenegro’s Budvanska Rivijera Budva on Jan. 12. Piraeus finished pool play with a 1-5 record and will not advance.

Piraeus fell 3-2 (24-26, 25-17, 17-25, 30-28, 15-6. Jablonsky started the match and finished with nine points.

Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah) and his Polish League team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów will advance to the semifinals of the CEV Cup after taking a second victory over Germany’s evivo Duren on Jan. 12.

Millar started in the match, which Resovia Rzeszów won, 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 27-25, 15-7).

U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) and his Spanish league team Unicaja Almeria were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the CEV Cup by Poland’s Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle.

Almeria had won the previous meeting between the two teams, 3-2, but then lost its Jan. 12 match, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21). Due to the tie in matches, a “golden set” was played, which Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle won, 15-7.


U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) and his Russian Super League team Fakel Novy Urengoi beat Dinamo-Yantar Kaliningrad, 25-21, 26-24, 25-15 on Jan. 8. Hansen started the first two sets and scored two points on two blocks. His team finished with a 0.49 hitting percentage.

Ural Ufa and U.S. opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii) fell to Dynamo Krasnodar, 3-1 (25-19, 29-31, 25-21, 25-22) on Jan. 8. Stanley scored 17 points on 14 kills (0.48 hitting percentage), two blocks and one ace.

Ball and Priddy defeated Kuzbass Kemerovo, the team of U.S. middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 on Jan. 8. However Priddy was the only U.S. player who competed in the match.

Kazan chose to rest Ball and Priddy played as a substitute in the third set, scoring one point on a kill. Due to injury, Lee did not play for Kemerovo. Kazan continues to lead the Super League.


U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and his Italian Serie A Leage team Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia took down more compatriots as they topped Marmi Lanza Verona, the Italian team of U.S. middle blocker Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), on Jan. 9, 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17).

Anderson scored 19 points on 13 kills (0.24 hitting percentage), three blocks and three aces. He was also credited with 34 receptions, 68 percent positive and 44 percent excellent.

Brunner had 10 points on eight kills (0.73 hitting percentage), one block and one ace. Lotman started the first three sets and substituted in the fourth, scoring nine points on eight kills (0.28 hitting percentage) and one ace. He was credited with 14 receptions, 71 percent positive and 57 percent excellent.

Vibo Valentia is in sixth place in the league while Verona is 11th.

U.S. outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) and Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza fell to Casa Modena on Jan. 9, 3-2 (10-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14). Rooney scored 11 points on 10 kills (0.37 hitting percentage) and one block. Rooney was also credited with 25 receptions, 48 percent positive and 20 percent excellent.

Monza Brianza is in eighth place in the league.

U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and his team Copra Morpho Piacenza defeated M. Roma Volley on Jan. 9, 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 18-25, 27-25, 15-11). Holt scored 11 points on five kills (0.44 hitting percentage), four blocks and two aces. The team is in 10th place in the league.


U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) and his German league team SCC Berlin fell to VfB Friedrichshafen on Jan. 9, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20. Touzinsky finished with five points on five kills (0.33 hitting percentage). SCC Berlin is in third place in the league.


U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) scored 10 points as his Brazilian league team Vivo/Minas defeated Soya/Blumenau/Mart Plus on Jan. 5, 3-1 (21-15, 25-23, 25-16, 25-22). Holmes scored on seven kills, one block and two aces.

On Jan. 7, Vivo/Minas fell to Cimed, 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13). Holmes scored seven points on six kills and one block. Vivo/Minas is in seventh place in the league.


Millar and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów beat ZAK SA Kędzierzyn-Koźle on Jan. 9, 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 27-25, 19-25, 15-9. Millar played as a substitute. Resovia Rzeszów is in third place in the league.


Smith and Unicaja Almeria continue to lead the league following a 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 22-25, 18-16) victory over CV 7 Islas V. on Jan. 8.

Smith scored 11 points on eight kills and three blocks.


U.S. setter Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.) and his French B league team Chaumont defeated CNVB on Jan. 8, 25-22, 25-14, 25-22. Thornton scored three points and set his team to a 0.58 kill percentage.
