U.S. Men's Update: News from Poland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 24, 2011) – U.S. middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah) and his Polish league team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów won their last two playoff matches, but fell in CEV Cup play.

On Feb. 16, Millar and Resovia Rzeszów defeated ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle, 3-2 (22-25, 25-27, 25-22, 25-18, 17-15. Millar scored 16 points on 10 kills (0.53 hitting percentage), five blocks and one ace.

On Feb. 19, Resovia Rzeszów topped Tytan AZS Częstochowa, 3-1 (30-28, 24-26, 25-22, 26-24). Millar scored seven points on five kills (0.42 hitting percentage) and two blocks.

Resovia Rzeszów sits in second place in the playoff battle for first through sixth place behind PGE Skra Bełchatów.

In the semifinals of the CEV Cup on Feb. 23, Italy’s Sisley Treviso topped Resovia Rzeszów, 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 12-15) in Poland. The two teams will play again on Feb. 26 in Italy.

U.S. libero Rich Lambourne is playing in the Polish league for KS Fart Kielce, which is in the playoffs to determine seventh-10th places. It is in second place in the playoffs.

On Feb. 19, it defeated Pamapol Wielton Wieluń, 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23). Lambourne was credited with 20 receptions, 65 percent positive and 25 percent excellent.

RUSSIA

Zenit Kazan, the Russian Super League team of U.S. setter Lloy Ball (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), continues to lead the league despite going 1-1 in its last two matches.

On Feb. 20, Kazan took a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16) victory over Gazprom-Ugra Surgut.

Ball started all four sets and did not score, but set the team to a 0.53 hitting percentage. Priddy substituted in the second set and started the third and fourth. He scored 11 points on six kills (0.75 hitting percentage) and a match-high five blocks. He was credited with 13 receptions, 54 percent positive and 23 percent excellent.

On Feb. 23, Kazan fell to Dynamo Moscow, 3-2 (20-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 15-11). Priddy scored 18 points on 16 kills (0.62 hitting percentage), one block and one ace. He was also credited with 29 receptions, 55 percent positive and 28 percent excellent. Ball scored one point on a block and set the team to a 0.30 hitting percentage.

Kazan will take a couple weeks off from the Super League to play in the CEV Champions League tournament against PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland. The teams will play on March 2 and 9. Matches can be viewed at www.laola1.tv.

U.S. opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii) and his team Ural Ufa defeated Yaroslavich Yaroslavl, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23 on Feb. 19. Stanley led all scorers with 15 points on 12 kills (0.31 hitting percentage), two blocks and one ace.

U.S. middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) and his team Kuzbass Kemerovo beat Dynamo-Yantar Kaliningrad, 25-18, 25-23, 25-16 on Feb. 19. Lee scored four points on one kill, two blocks and one ace.

U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) and his team Fakel Novy Urengoi beat Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, 3-1 (36-34, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21) on Feb. 19. Hansen played as a substitute and scored one point on an ace.

BRAZIL

U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and his Brazilian Superleague team Vivo/Minas have won two straight matches.

On Feb. 17, Vivo/Minas swept Sao Caetano/Tamoya, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21). Holmes scored six points on four kills and two blocks.

On Feb. 19, Vivo/Minas defeated BMG/Sao Bernardo, 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-10). Holmes started the first three sets and scored six points on two kills, three blocks and one ace.

Vivo/Minas is in fifth place in the league.

GERMANY

U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) and his German league team SCC Berlin swept A!B!C Titans Berg. Land, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 on Feb. 20.

Touzinsky started the first two sets and scored nine points on eight kills (0.73 hitting percentage) and one ace.

KOREA

U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) and his Korean league team Korean Air won three matches in the last week and did not drop a set.

On Feb. 20, KAL defeated Hyundai, 25-20, 25-15, 25-23. Patak scored 17 points on 14 kills and three aces.

On Feb. 22, KAL beat Sangmu, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18. Patak started the first two sets and scored 13 points on 11 kills, one ace and one block.

On Feb. 24, KAL topped Samsung, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19. Patak led all scorers with 19 points on 15 kills, two blocks and two aces.

GREECE

In a match between two Greek league teams with U.S. players, U.S. outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Olympiacos defeated U.S. opposite Will Price (Gaithersburg, Md.) and GS Lamia, 3-2 (25-27, 25-23, 20-25, 28-26, 15-13) on Feb. 20.

Jablonsky scored 13 points on 11 kills, one block and one ace. Price scored 12 points on 10 kills, one block and one ace.

Olympiacos is in third place in the league while Lamia is in sixth.

Iraklis, including U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and outside hitter Ryan Owens (Evanston, Ill.), is tied with Panathinaikos for the league lead after taking a 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12) victory over EA Patron Lux on Feb. 19.

Billings scored 21 points on 18 kills (0.24 hitting percentage) and three blocks. Owens started the first two sets and added eight points on seven kills (0.40 hitting percentage) and one block.

U.S. setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.) and PAOK won their fifth match in a row on Feb. 20, defeating ESOP Epikouros, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20. Winder started the match and scored three points. PAOK is in fourth place in the league.

Olympiacos will play Panathinaikos in the Greek Cup semifinals while Iraklis will face PAOK. Both matches will be March 2.

ITALY

U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and his Italian Serie A League team Copra Morpho Piacenza swept RPA-LuigiBacchi.it San Giustino, 25-15, 25-23, 27-25 on Feb. 20.

Holt scored five points on two kills, two blocks and one ace.

U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia suffered a 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 26-28, 25-18, 20-18) loss to Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo, the league’s second-place team, on Feb. 20.

Anderson led Vibo Valentia with 21 points on 19 kills (0.34 hitting percentage) and two blocks. He was also credited with 40 receptions, 65 percent positive and 35 percent excellent.

U.S. outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) and his team Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza were swept by BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte, 25-17, 25-16, 25-19. Rooney scored nine points on eight kills (0.33 hitting percentage) and one block. He was also credited with 24 receptions, 67 percent positive and 21 percent excellent.

Marmi Lanza Verona, including U.S. middle blocker Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), were swept by Sisley Treviso, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21 on Feb. 20.

Lotman scored eight points on six kills (0.33 hitting percentage), one block and one ace. He was also credited with 15 receptions, 53 percent positive and 20 percent excellent. Brunner added seven points on five kills and two blocks.

U.S. opposite Gabe Gardner (San Clemente, Calif.) led all scorers with 22 points as his Italian Serie A2 league team Sir Safety Perugia defeated Edilesse Conad Reggio Emilia, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23).

Gardner scored on 17 kills (0.41 hitting percentage), three blocks and two aces.

SPAIN

Unicaja Almeria, the Spanish league team of U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) and outside hitter Riley Salmon (League City, Texas), suffered a rare loss on Feb. 19 when it fell to Tarragona SPiSP, 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 27-25).

Smith started all four sets and scored eight points on six kills (0.60 hitting percentage) and two aces. Salmon substituted in the second set and started the third and fourth, scoring 13 points on 12 kills (0.69 hitting percentage) and one ace.

FRANCE

U.S. setter Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.) and outside hitter Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) led their French B league team Chaumont to a 3-1 (27-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17) victory over Dunkerque on Feb. 19.

Vance led all scorers with 19 points on 15 kills (0.54 kill percentage), two blocks and two aces. Thornton did not score, but set the team to a 0.53 kill percentage.
