U.S. Men's Update: Touzinsky in the Semis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 20, 2011) – It’s another week of updates on U.S. Men’s National and A2 Team players competing around the world.

GERMANY

U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) and his German league team SCC Berlin won their playoff quarterfinal series against RWE Volleys Bottrop and are 1-0 in the semifinals against Generali Haching.

SCC Berlin won its first semifinal match, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22 on April 19. Touzinsky scored nine points on nine kills. He was also credited 10 receptions, 70 percent positive and 20 percent excellent.

The next match in the best-of-three series is scheduled for April 23.

RUSSIA

Zenit Kazan, the Russian Super League team of U.S. setter Lloy Ball (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), has advanced to the league finals by winning a best-of-five series against Dinamo Krasnodar, 3-1.

In the final match on April 21, Priddy scored nine points on eight kills (0.67 hitting percentage) and one block. He was credited with 14 receptions, 50 percent positive and 29 percent excellent. Ball scored three points on one kill and two aces. He set the team to a 0.47 hitting percentage.

Kazan will play either Lokomotiv Belogorie or Dinamo Krasnodar in the finals.

ITALY

U.S. outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) and his Italian Serie A league team Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza fell to Casa Modena in their best-of-five quarterfinal playoff series.

With the two teams tied at 1-1, Monza Brianza won the next match, 25-16, 17-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12, on April 14. Rooney scored 20 points on 19 kills (0.56 hitting percentage) and one block. He was credited with 32 receptions, 56 percent positive and 25 percent excellent.

Casa Modena tied the series at 2-2 on April 17 with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 sweep. Rooney had six points on six kills.

Casa Modena won the quarterfinals with a 25-23, 26-24, 25-20 victory on April 20. Rooney had 12 points on nine kills (0.41 hitting percentage), one block and two aces. He was credited with 18 receptions, 44 percent positive and 17 percent excellent.

Marmi Lanza Verona, including U.S. middle blocker Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), also lost in the playoff quarterfinals, 3-0 to Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo.

Both players’ best match was played on April 10 when Verona took Cuneo to five sets before falling, 25-23, 25-20, 17-25, 15-25, 15-13. Lotman scored 18 points on 14 kills (0.44 hitting percentage), two blocks and two aces. He was also credited with 25 receptions, 52 percent positive and 36 percent excellent.

Brunner scored 13 points on nine kills and four blocks.

FRANCE

U.S. setter Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.) and outside hitter Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) and their French B league team Chaumont defeated PI-Robinson, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 on April 19.

Vance scored seven points, including six kills (0.75 kill percentage). Thornton added two points and set the team to a 0.72 kill percentage.

BRAZIL

U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and his Brazilian Superleague team Vivo/Minas fell in the match for third place in the playoffs to Vôlei Futuro, 25-16, 25-23, 25-19.

Holmes started the first two sets and substituted in the third, scoring four points, including three blocks.

POLAND

U.S. middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah) and his Polish league team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów won its third-place playoff series against Tytan AZS Częstochowa, 3-0.

In their first match on April 13, Millar and Resovia Rzeszów defeated Tytan AZS Częstochowa, 16-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23, 15-11. Millar scored seven points on five kills, one block and one ace.

In their second match on April 14, Millar and Resovia Rzeszów won 25-16, 25-22, 26-24. Millar scored seven points on three kills and a match-high four blocks.

Fart Kielce, including U.S. libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) leads its best-of-seven series against Pamapol Wielton Wieluń to determine the league’s ninth-place finisher, 2-1.

On April 13, Kielce fell 25-23, 25-16, 25-27, 12-25, 15-11. Lambourne was credited with 42 receptions, 52 percent positive and 38 percent excellent.

On April 16, Kielce came back to win, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20. Lambourne was credited with 35 receptions, 66 percent positive and 46 percent excellent.

SPAIN

Unicaja Almeria, the Spanish league team of U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), won its semifinal playoff series against Ciudad del Medio Ambiente Soria, 3-0.

On April 15, Almeria won 21-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-12. Smith scored 13 points on eight kills and a match-high five blocks.

On April 16, Almeria took a 24-26, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 victory. Smith scored 11 points on seven kills, three blocks and one ace.
On April 22, Almeria won the final semifinal match, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19. Smith scored seven points on four kills, two blocks and one ace.

Almeria will play CAI Voleibol Teruel in the finals, which begin April 29.
