COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 17, 2010) – Play in the CEV Champions League, the CEV Cup and the GM Capital Challenge Cup began this week and several European club teams with U.S. Men’s National Team players are competing.
U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky’s German team SCC Berlin is playing in the CEV Cup and defeated Romania’s Tomis Constanta on Wednesday, 25-21, 25-13, 25-16.
U.S. middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah) and his Polish Superliga team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów are also competing in the CEV Cup and defeated Hungary’s Kaposvari Röplabda SE on Wednesday, 25-13, 25-19, 25-19.
Switzerland’s Volley Amriswil, which includes U.S. players Max Lipsitz (middle blocker; Williamsville, N.Y.) and Daniel Mathews (setter; Shorewood, Wis.) fell to Anorthosis Famagusta of Cyprus on Wednesday, 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 25-22, 20-25, 15-10).
On Thursday in the CEV Cup, Spain’s Unicaja Almeria, which includes U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) will play Greece’s GC Lamia, which features of U.S. opposite Will Price (Gaithersburg, Md.) and middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.).
In the CEV Champions League, Zenit Kazan, the Russian Super League team of U.S. setter Lloy Ball (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), won its first pool play match against France’s AS Cannes, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 on Nov. 16. Priddy did not play as he was visiting his family in the United States. But Ball started all three sets, scoring four points on two kills, one block and one ace. He also set Kazan to a 0.51 hitting percentage.
Also in the Champions League, Olympiacos Piraeus, the Greek team of U.S. outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) fell to Budvanska Rivijera Budba of Montenegro, 27-25, 25-21, 25-20 on Nov. 17. Jablonsky started all three sets and scored five points on four kills and one block.
In the Challenge Cup, U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Fakel Novy Urengoi defeated Serbia’s Partizan Beograd, 25-15, 25-15, 25-16 on Nov. 17. The two teams will play again on Nov. 23.
Isku Tampere, the Finnish team of U.S. setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) will play a Challenge Cup match on Thursday against Draisma Dynamo Apeldoorn of Netherlands.
Cup of Russia play continued last weekend, with Kazan qualifying for the final four.
Ball, Priddy and Kazan won their first two matches against Ugra-Samotlor Nizhnevartovsk and Yaroslavich Yaroslavl on Nov. 9 and 10 respectively. On Nov. 11, Kazan topped U.S. opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii) and his team Ufa Ural, 2-27, 27-25, 25-013. It is interesting to note that Stanley played with Ball on Kazan for the last four years.
Stanley stared at opposite and led all scorers with 16 points for Ufa. Ball started at setter and scored six points. Priddy started at outside hitter and added six points.
Kazan won the pool at 3-0 while Ufa finished 2-1.
Hansen and Fakel Novy Urengoi finished pool play with a victory over Dorozhnik Krasnoyarsk, 25-21, 25-19, 26-24 on Nov. 11. However Novy Urengoi’s record of 2-1 was not good enough as Lokomotiv Novosibirsk won the pool at 3-0.
U.S. middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) and Kuzbass Kemerovo finished pool play with a 1-2 record after losing to Novosibirsk on Nov. 11, 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 25-21).
On Nov. 14, Millar and Resovia Rzeszów suffered their second Plusliga loss of the season to Domex Tytan AZS Częstochowa, 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-23).
Millar substituted in two sets and started the fourth, scoring six points on four kills, one block and one ace.
U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and his team Copra Morpho Piacenza defeated Sisley Treviso in an Italian Serie A League match on Nov. 14, 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 28-26, 18-25, 15-13).
Holt started all five sets and scored six points on three kills, two blocks and one ace.
U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored 20 points for Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia, but it fell to Casa Modena, 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 14-25, 25-17, 15-13). Anderson started all five sets and had 14 kills (0.34 hitting percentage), one block and five aces.
Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza and U.S. outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) fell to M. Roma Volley, 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-13). Rooney started all five sets and led all scorers with 22 points on 19 kills (0.45 hitting percentage) and three blocks.
Marmi Lanza Verona, the Italian Serie A League team of U.S. middle blocker Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) fell to RPA-LuigiBacchi.it San Giustino on Nov. 11, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20.
Brunner started all three sets and scored five points on four kills (0.61 hitting percentage) and one block. Lotman substituted in the first set and started the second and third, finishing with six points on three kills, two blocks and one ace.
U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) and his Spanish league team Unicaja Almeria defeated C.M.A. de Soria Numancia, 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 15-10) on Nov. 13.
Smith started all five sets and scored 10 points on six kills (0.42 hitting percentage), three blocks and one ace.
U.S. setter Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.) is playing for Chaumont in France’s B league. On Nov. 13 he helped his team to a 25-22, 26-24, 28-26 victory over Martigues. Thornton started all three sets and scored one point. He set his team to a 0.52 attack percentage.
