COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 3, 2010) – USA Volleyball has announced its 19-man roster for the 2010 FIVB World League, the world’s premier annual men’s volleyball competition.
U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team staff will choose a team of 12 or 14 players from the roster of 19 for each weekend of World League competition. If 14 players are chosen, then two of them must be liberos.
“I believe we have put together a solid group with a good mixture of veterans and new players that can do well at World League,” said U.S. Men’s Head Coach Alan Knipe (Huntington Beach, Calif.). “I’m looking forward to having everyone back in the gym so we can get started.”
The 2010 summer training block began today at the USA National Team Center in the American Sports Centers in Anaheim, Calif. However not all 19 players will be back in the gym right away.
Nine players on the 19-man roster are returning from the 2008 U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team that won gold medals in World League and the Olympic Games in Beijing: setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.), middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah), outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) outside hitter Riley Salmon (League City, Texas), opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawai’i) and outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.).
Priddy, a 10-year team member and two-time Olympian, will serve as the U.S. team captain for World League.
Several other players on the roster were not with the team in 2008, but played in the 2009 World League campaign including setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), a 2004 Olympian.
Other 2009 World League veterans on the roster are outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.), middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.), middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.), outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) and libero Alfee Reft (Oxnard, Calif.).
Newcomers to the World League roster are setter Tyler Hildebrand (Mesa, Ariz.) and middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio).
The FIVB World League is an exciting elite men’s volleyball competition in which the world’s best teams are divided into four pools and play for six straight weekends from June 4 to July 11. Winners from each pool will qualify for the final round on July 21-25 in Cordoba, Argentina, along with the host country and a pick from among the second-place teams in pool play.
The total World League prize purse is more than $20 million, with the winning team collecting a prize of more than $1 million.
U.S. fans can watch Team USA play live in World League matches in Concord, N.C. (June 18-19 vs. Egypt), Hoffman Estates, Ill. (June 25-26 vs. Finland) and Wichita, Kan. (July 9-10 vs. Russia).
