COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 17, 2010) – The U.S. Women’s National Red Team defeated its Blue Team counterpart 26-24, 25-22, 25-23, 24-26 in a four-set Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday in Irvine, Calif., at Irvine Valley College.
The match, predetermined to go at least four sets, filled the stands with approximately 700 attendees.
The Red Team high scorer was Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah) with 28 points on 23 kills out of 49 attempts and five blocks for the Red Team. Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) also tallied double digits with 19 points, 16 kills out of 45 attempts along with three blocks. Lauren Paolini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) contributed 14 points with nine kills out of 15 attempts, four blocks and an ace. Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had seven points, Akinradewo scored six points. Destinee Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) and Nancy Metcalf (Hull, Iowa) each had four points apiece and Nellie Spicer (Barrington, Ill.) added two points.
The highest scorers for the Blue Team were Ogonna Nnamani (Bloomington, Ill.) and Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.) each contributing 14 points to their team win. Nnamani tallied 13 kills out of 28 attempts and also scored an ace. Barboza scored 13 kills out of 40 attempts and one block. Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) added 10 kills out of 29 attempts. Christa Harmotto (Hopewell, Pa.) added nine points. Jennifer Tamas (Milpitas, Calif.) and Angie Pressey Forsett (Lake Mary, Fla.) each contributed eight points, apiece and Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) added one point.
Red Team starters were outside hitters Hodge and Tom, Metcalf at opposite, Bown and Paolini at middle blocker, and Spicer at setter. Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas) served as the libero. Hooker started the third and fourth sets in place of Metcalf, while Akinradewo started the third and fourth sets in place of Bown.
Starting for the Blue Team were middle blockers Harmotto and Tamas, outside hitters Barboza and Pressey Forsett, Nnamani at opposite and Glass at setter. The Blue Team libero was Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.). Fawcett started the third and fourth sets for Nnamani, while Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.) started the final two sets for Glass.
The Red Team out-scored the Blue Team 85-65. The Red Team also out-blocked them 14-6 and won the kill ratio 67-57. The Red also held a slim 4-2 advantage in aces.
The scrimmage’s purpose was to help determine the select players whom will compete in each of the three preliminary weekends hosted in Gdynia, Poland, along with the Final Round of the upcoming FIVB World Grand Prix. Team USA will face Dominican Republic on Aug. 6, Germany on Aug. 7 and Poland on Aug. 8 during the first weekend of the preliminary round matches. For the second preliminary round, the U.S. will travel to Bangkok and Thailand to face Italy on Aug. 13, Thailand on Aug. 14 and Puerto Rico on Aug. 15. The Women’s National Team will conclude the preliminary round in Hong Kong where they will play Germany again on Aug. 20 and Thailand on Aug. 21, along with a match-up verses China on Aug. 22.
The FIVB World Grand Prix Final Round will take place Aug. 25-29 at Ningbo, China. The top five of the six teams in the preliminary rounds will join host China in the Final Round.
The second exhibition is scheduled for St. Margaret’s Episcopal School (31641 LaNovia Avenue, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) on July 24 at 7 p.m. PT. Tickets are $5 at the door.
