U.S. Men's Update: Kazan Comes Out on Top

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 6, 2010) – Zenit Kazan, the Super League team of Lloy Ball (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii), won the Cup of Russia on Dec. 27 with a 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 30-28, 15-9) victory over Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, the team Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.) and David Lee (Alpine, Calif.).

Novosibirsk advanced to the final with a victory over Fakel Novy Urengoi, the Russian team of Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.), in the quarterfinals, 25-17, 25-21, 25-13, on Dec. 26.

In regular Russian Super League play on Dec. 31, Novosibirsk swept Lokomotiv-Izumrud, 27-25, 25-22, 25-20. Priddy had 12 points on nine kills, one block and two aces. Lee added eight points on five kills and three blocks.

Kazan lost to Yaroslavich Yaroslavl, 1-3 (21-25, 16-25, 25-15, 28-30). Ball started all four sets and scored four points on two kills, one block and one ace. Stanley started the first set, substituted in two others, and scored one points on one kill.

Fakel fell, 1-3 (27-29, 25-14, 25-27, 17-25), to Gazprom-Ugra. Rooney started all four sets and led Fakel with 16 points on 13 kills, two blocks and one ace. Hansen started all four sets and scored six points on three kills and three blocks.

On Jan. 5, Fakel fell to Iskra Odintsovo 1-3 (23-25, 27-25, 22-25, 21-25) in the CEV Cup.

The Russian All-Star match will be held on Jan. 31. Fans are voting for which players will make up the Russian and international teams. All six U.S. players in Russia are candidates for the international team.

Transfer News

U.S. setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.) has signed with RWE Volleys Bottrop in the German league.

Italy

Marmi Lanza Verona, featuring Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio), defeated Prisma Taranto, the Italian Serie A League team of setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 25-13, 22-25, 19-17) on Jan. 3.

Holt started all five sets and scored 13 points on six kills, four blocks and three aces. Suxho started all five sets and scored five points on three kills, one block and one ace.

Puerto Rico

Leones de Ponce defeated Indios de Mayagüez, 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23), on Dec. 22. Tony Ching (Hawaii) scored 17 points on 16 kills and one block. Delano Thomas (Sacrament, Calif.) added 10 points on eight kills, one block and one ace.

With 21 points from David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) and 20 from Hudson Bates (Richmond, Va.), Caribes de San Sebastian defeated Nuevos Gigantes de Carolina, 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 24-26, 17-15) on Dec. 22. Smith scored on 13 kills, five blocks and three aces. Bates scored on 16 kills, three blocks and one ace.

On Christmas Eve, the Guaynabo Mets topped Plataneros de Corozal, 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 27-25, 25-17). Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) scored 14 points on 13 kills and one block for Guaynabo. Corozal got 13 points from Casey Patterson (Newbury Park, Calif.) on 11 kills and two aces. Nils Nielsen (Fallbrook, Calif.) added 11 points on nine kills and two aces. Matt McKinney (Santa Ynez, Calif.) scored 10 points on eight kills, one block and one ace.

Also on Christmas Eve, Ponce beat Changos de Naranjito, 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 16-14). Ching led Ponce with 22 points on 21 kills and one block. Thomas added 14 points on 10 kills, three blocks and one ace. Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) scored nine points on nine kills for Naranjito. C.J. Macias added six points on five kills and one block.

On Dec. 27, Guaynabo swept Mayaguez, 25-18, 25-23, 26-24, Vance had 12 points for Guaynabo on eight kills and four blocks.

Also on Dec. 27, Patriotas de Lares defeated San Sebastian, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23). Smith scored 17 points for San Sebastian on nine kills, seven blocks and one ace. Bates added 16 points on 14 kills and two blocks.

Naranjito swept Nuevos Gigantes de Carolina on Dec. 27, (31-29, 25-18, 25-21). C.J. Macias scored nine points for Naranjito on eight kills and one block. Hein added eight points on six kills and one block.

Corozal defeated Ponce on Dec. 27, 3-2 (20-25, 28-30, 30-28, 25-22, 15-7). Nielsen scored 14 points on 13 kills and one block. McKinney totaled eight points on eight kills. Ponce’s Ching led all scorers with 25 points on 24 kills and one ace. Thomas totaled 18 points on 12 kills, three blocks and three aces.

The following night, Corozal defeated Naranjito, 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20). Patterson led Corozal with 13 points on 11 kills and two blocks. McKinney had 10 points on nine kills and one ace. Nielsen added 10 points on seven kills and three blocks. Naranjito’s Hein totaled 12 points on 10 kills and two blocks. Macias scored six points on six kills.

Carolina topped Guaynabo, 3-2 (25-27, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-13) on Dec. 29. Vance led Guaynabo with 19 points on 19 kills.

On New Year’s Eve eve, Lares defeated Corozal, 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22). Nielsen scored 11 points for Corozal on 11 kills. Patterson had 10 points on seven kills and three aces. McKinney totaled nine points on seven kills and two blocks.

The same night, Ponce swept San Sebastian, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21. Ponce’s Ching scored 12 points on six kills, one block and five aces. Thomas added 11 points on nine kills and two aces. San Sebastian’s Smith scored 12 points on four kills, seven blocks and one ace. Bates totaled four points on three kills and one block.

On Jan. 4, Naranjito swept Guaynabo, 25-17, 25-19, 25-10. Macias scored 11 points on six kills and five blocks while Hein totaled three points on two kills and one ace. Vance had five points on five kills for Guaynabo.

Also on Jan. 4, Corozal swept Mayaguez, 25-22, 25-19, 25-13. Corozal’s Patterson led all scorers with 15 points on 12 kills, one block and two aces. Nielsen scored 10 points on nine kills and one ace. McKinney totaled eight points on six kills, one block and one ace.

CEV Indesit Champions Cup

Hypo Tyrol Innsbruck, the Austrian club team of Russell Holmes, defeated Montenegro’s Budvanska Rivijera Budva, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18) in the CEV Indesit Champions Cup on Jan. 5.

Holmes started all four sets and scored 13 points on eight kills and five blocks.

Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediye, the Turkish league team of Ryan Millar (Palmdale, Calif.) and Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), fell to Poland’s Asseco Resovia Rzeszow on Jan. 6., 18-25, 17-25, 21-25.

France

On Jan. 3, Poitiers, the French team of Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) defeated Ajaccio, 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 24-26, 25-23). Lotman started all four sets and scored eight points.
On Jan. 6, Poitiers defeated Slovenia’s Salonit Anhovo Kanal in the CEV Challenge Cup, 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 16-25, 25-21).

Poland

Delecta Bydgoszcz, the Polish league team of U.S. libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.), advanced to the semifinals of the Cup of Poland with a sweep of Siatkarz Wieluń, 25-21, 31-29, 25-23 on Jan. 5.

Brazil

Vivo/Minas, the Brazilian league team of Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) defeated Lupo/Nautico/Let’s, 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-12). Salmon started all four sets and scored 14 points on 12 kills and two aces.
