COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 10, 2010) – The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team coaching staff has initiated a new program called Coaching Outreach Program (COP) to promote the exchange of coaching ideas between the U.S. Women’s National Team and college community.
The U.S. Women’s National Team coaching staff of head coach Hugh McCutcheon (Christchurch, New Zealand), assistant coach Karch Kiraly (San Clemente, Calif.) and assistant coach/technical coordinator Jamie Morrison (Dana Point, Calif.) developed the foundation of the COP program last summer with several goals in mind. The intentions of the program are three-fold: 1. Develop professionally as a group; 2. Build bridges and improve lines of communication between the U.S. National Team staff and the college coaching community; and 3. Catalyze discussion about best practices in teaching and learning.
The first COP session, with 20 coaches in attendance, was held Feb. 9-10 at the USA National Team Center located inside the American Sports Centers in Anaheim, Calif. The second session will take place Feb. 15-16 with an additional 10 coaches participating in the COP program.
To start the program in 2010, the U.S. Women’s National Team coaching staff invited the head coaches and assistant coaches of all NCAA Division I programs who received an automatic berth into the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship tournament, plus some additional coaches by invitation.
“In our invitation letter, we assured the coaches that the National Team staff is not interested in telling anyone how to run their program, or in telling anyone how they should be developing players for the next level,” Kiraly explained. “The program’s goal is to stimulate thought, discussion and idea exchange.”
As part of the program, the invited coaches took part in a tutoring and practice session from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 9. As a group, the coaches had a working lunch with the National Team coaching staff at the White House, one of the U.S. National Team Center sponsors in Anaheim, to talk volleyball and continue discussions on best practices. The day continued with the invited coaches watching the National Team performing individual work from 3-4 p.m. The session concluded on Feb. 10 as the invited coaches watched a second tutoring and practice session 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“I think the coaches really enjoyed the low-key atmosphere of this program to talk about volleyball,” Kiraly said. “This was an opportunity for them to explore new ideas even with coaches who they compete against on the court and for recruits.”
The U.S. Women’s National Team coaching staff sees this as an annual event occurring in February with the purpose of allowing any new ideas to be implemented into a spring training season.
“We have chosen February, as opposed to May, for the COP program so that if the college coaches see any new ideas that interest them at the USA National Team Center, they will have the opportunity to put them into practice in their spring training period rather than later in the August pres-season,” Kiraly said.
