MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 27, 2009) – Albert Hannemann and Austin Rester played three matches in the span of three hours Sunday to capture the 2009 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball Men’s Open Division championship, ousting Michael DiPierro and Adam Roberts, 21-17, 21-14 in action at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Hannemann (Torrance, Calif.) and Rester (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had lost to DiPierro U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball Logo(Pompano Beach, Fla.) and Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) earlier in the afternoon, 21-17, 21-18, in the final of the winners’ bracket of the double-elimination event. The local players came back and quickly handled the Minnesota-based team of Ben Shamrokh and Adam VanOort to set up the championship match.

“I really enjoy winning in Manhattan Beach,” Hannemann said following the final.  “We saw some things with these guys in the first match and we knew what we had to work on for the final.”

One of those things clearly was a stronger serving game. Rester picked up several free points on powerful serves and that allowed the Californians to get past DiPierro and Roberts in the championships match. Hannemann and Rester were placed in the U.S. Open after finishing as the runner-ups at the Corona Wide Open qualifying event in Santa Monica, Calif. The winning team in Santa Monica was unable to make it to the U.S. Open, allowing Hannemann and Rester a spot in the draw.

In the Women’s Open Division championship, Kim McGiven (San Diego, Calif.) and Juliana Evens (Encinitas, Calif.) took home the title with a 21-13, 21-15 win over Iwona Lodzik and Sarah Straton, both from Redondo Beach, Calif. McGiven and Evens qualified for the U.S. Open after winning the Corona Wide Open this June in Santa Cruz, Calif.

“Juliana played really well this afternoon and that helped us stay in the march,” McGiven said after the match. “We were pretty rested and well prepared for this weekend and it paid off today.”

McGiven and Evens were happy the U.S. Open is a double-elimination tournament as the two teams who reached the final played earlier in the day Sunday, with Lodzik and Straton winning in straight sets, 21-18, 21-16. The morning win put the Redondo Beach team directly into the championship, while McGiven and Evens were forced to play another match to earn their way back to the championship.

“I don’t know what happened between this morning’s match and this final,” Straton said. “We breezed this morning and we just weren’t as sharp when it really counted.”

In other action Sunday, three divisions of two-person co-ed play were held. Winners of the Co-ed Open division were Billy Allen (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Janelle Ruen (Post Falls, Idaho). Dave Fisher (Ventura, Calif.) and Carol Killeen (Santa Monica) won the Co-ed A division and the Santa Cruz Calif. team of Ernest Plat and Lara Gaske won the championship in the Co-ed B division.

The U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball is sanctioned by USA Volleyball and presented by Corona Extra.  Other sponsors of this year’s U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball are Oakley, Spalding, Fiji Water, Surftech, Quik Performance and Jones Trading.
