2009 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball Field Complete

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2009) – The field for the men’s and women’s open divisions at the 2009 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball were set Friday following the final qualifying event for the third annual tournament, which is being played this weekend in Manhattan Beach.

Seven teams advanced into the 32-team men’s open division and will begin play Saturday at 9 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball Logoa.m.  Teams advancing included Jeff Carlucci (San Diego, Calif.) and Ty Tramblie ( Newport Beach, Calif.); the Orange County team of Chad Mowrey and Adam Jewell;  Paul Baxter (Venice, Calif.) and Paul Bocage (Princeton, N. J.); and Dane Pearson (Venice, Calif.) and Ranni Kumgiski (Los Angeles, Calif.).  Also advancing were Chris Icaza (Manhattan Beach) and Matt Cera (Brentwood, Calif.); the San Diego team of Pepe De La Hoz and Leo Moraes; and Seth Burnham (Tarzana, Calif.) and Kevin McColloch (Solana Beach, Calif.).

Additionally, four women’s teams advanced to the main draw in the women’s open division, including Heather Lowe (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Teale Hunkus (El Segundo, Calif.); Gretchen Duffner (Manhattan Beach) and Barb Carson (Los Angeles); Josie Lehman (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Mari-de Boyer (Poway, Calif.); and Christina Hinds (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Keao Burdine (Hermosa, Calif.).

Approximately 750 volleyball players from around the country will be competing in 17 different divisions of play in Manhattan Beach this weekend.  Competitors earned a berth into the 2009 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball by winning their division in one of 32 national qualifying events, including the eight stops on the Corona Wide Open tour.

Saturday’s action will see U.S. Open champions crowned in all two-person men’s and women’s divisions, with the exception of the open divisions.  The final rounds of the open divisions will be played Sunday with the women’s open final expected to start at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s open division final at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Co-ed play in two-person and four-person divisions also will be played on Sunday.
