U.S. Women's Beach Team Wins at Junior Worlds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 17, 2009) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) won its first main draw, pool play match on Thursday at the 2009 FIVB Junior Beach World Championship in Blackpool, England.
Machado and Ross, who are seeded eighth in the event, defeated Estonia’s 17th-ranked Kristel Kiens and Kertti Kulm, 21-19, 18-21, 15-12 in 45 minutes.
Machado and Ross will complete pool play on Friday, facing Finland’s Eveliina Koljonen and Taija Pekkarinen, seeded 20th, and the Czech Republic’s fifth-ranked Martina Bonnerova and Barbora Hermannova.
The U.S. men’s beach team of Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Steven “Stevo” VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) lost both of its main draw, pool play matches on Thursday.
Ross and VanderWerp, ranked ninth at the World Championship, fell to New Zealand’s 16th-seeded Sam Wallace-Boyd and Sam O'Dea, 15-21, 13-21 in 35 minutes.
In their second pool play match, Ross and VanderWerp lost to Poland’s 21st-ranked Marek Leznicki and Damian Wojtasik, 19-21, 6-21 in 29 minutes.
Leznicki and Wojtasik also defeated the U.S. men’s team of Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) on Wednesday to advance from the qualifying round.
Ross and VanderWerp will play fourth-seeded Alexey Pastukhov and Sergey Kostyukhin of Russia in their final pool play match on Friday.
