COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 16, 2009) – The 2009 FIVB Junior (U-21) Beach World Championship got off to a rough start for the United States as two of its teams lost in the qualifying round in Blackpool, England.
The U.S. men’s team of Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded fifth in the qualifying round, won its first match over Mexico’s 12th-ranked Jorge Barajas and Jesus Valdes, 21-15, 21-14 in 32 minutes.
However, Carlson and Montgomery fell in their second qualifying match, 19-21, 21-12, 15-11 in 42 minutes to Poland’s fourth-seeded Marek Leznicki and Damian Wojtasik, who moved on to the main draw, which begins play on Thursday.
The U.S. men’s beach team of Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Steven “Stevo” VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) will compete in the main draw starting on Thursday.
The U.S. women’s beach team of Samantha “Sammie” Brown (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Mary Vaccaro (Orinda, Calif.), ranked fourth in qualifying, lost its first match to the 13th-seeded qualifying team Natalia Dubovcov and Andrea Dudikova of the Slovak Republic, 9-21, 10-21 in 28 minutes. Dubovcov and Dudikova went on to qualify for Thursday’s main draw.
The U.S. women’s beach team of Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) will compete in Thursday’s main draw.
