COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 15, 2009) – For Bishop Shanahan High School of Downington, Pa., its volleyball program cannot hide the behind an anonymity curtain in 2009 as has it emerged as the top-ranked team in the state based on the Sept. 14 poll of the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association.
The Bishop Shanahan has got off to a fast start in 2009 after not being ranked among the top 10 in the final 2008 AAA Girls’ poll with a 15-3 overall record. Bishop Shanahan won the Spartan Invitational at Garden Spot High School this past weekend to move up from second to first in the statewide AAA poll.
“We are enjoying ourselves already,” said Bishop Shanahan Volleyball Head Coach Greg Ashman. “We recently were at a tournament (Spartan Invitational) at Garden Spot High School over the past weekend that had some of the top talent in the state participating. We played tough all day and got better as the tournament went on. We were able to peak in time for the playoffs and made a spectacular run through them coming out on top winning the tournament.”
Bishop Shanahan won two matches (versus Penn Manor and Cedar Cliff) and split two matches (versus Daniel Boone and Brandywine Heights) during pool play of the Spartan Invitational. After defeating Spring Grove in the quarterfinals, Bishop Shanahan topped Parkland 25-16, 25-15 in the semifinals and edged Brandywine Heights 26-24, 29-27 in a close two-set victory.
According to Ashman, the team is not taking for granted its new top billing.
“We are now ranked No. 1 in the state for AAA,” Ashman said. It is a spot we intend to hold onto for the season.”
