Six U.S. Beach Teams Moving on in Sanya

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 27, 2009) – Six U.S. beach teams will begin main draw play at the Sanya Open on Wednesday and Thursday in China. The event is part of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour.

The men’s main draw begins Wednesday. Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) are ranked 12th in the event and will face Venezuela’s 21st-seeded Igor Hernandez and Jesus Fañe.

The team of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) are ranked 18th and will face Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk and Konstantin Semenov, ranked 15th. Finally, Matt Olson (Cardiff, Calif.) and Kevin Wong (Honolulu, Hawaii) are seeded 31st and will go up against second-seeded Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira from Spain in the first round.

The U.S. Men’s team of Mike Morrison (Detroit, Mich.) and Curtis Jackson (Tustin, Calif.) played in Tuesday’s qualifying bracket, but did not advance to the main draw. They opened qualifying by defeating Netherland’s Alexander Brouwer and Christiaan Varenhorst, 21-17, 21-16 in 37 minutes. However they fell in the second round of qualifying to Italy’s Mateo and Paolo Ingrosso, 20-21, 21-23 in 47 minutes.

On the women’s side, Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) are the tournament’s defending champions and should receive a high seed.

Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) will be looking to reach their first SWATCH FIVB podium. Their best finish has been fourth.

Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) are also scheduled to compete in the main draw.
