COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 23, 2009) – U.S. Olympic volleyball gold medalist Bob Ctvrtlik and Olympic coach Rod Wilde will be inducted into Pepperdine University’s Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Sunday (Oct. 25).
The ceremony will be held at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills, Calif. A reception will be held at 5 p.m., with dinner and the awards presentation at 6 p.m.
Ctvrtlik played one season with the Waves (1985) following two seasons at Long Beach State. He led the Waves, under coach Marv Dunphy, to their second NCAA championship. He was named the National Player of the Year and the MVP of the NCAA Tournament. He was also named All-American first team and All-SCIVA first team. He led the Waves in kills (424), digs (103) and service aces (27) that season.
Ctvrtlik went on to play in three Olympic Games, winning the gold medal in 1988 and the bronze in 1992.
Ctvrtlik has served as the Vice President of International Affairs for the U.S. Olympic Committee and was a member of the International Olympic Committee. Most recently, he served as the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid committee vice chair.
Wilde played setter for four seasons (1976-79) at Pepperdine. He was named to the All-American first team three times. His teams shared two SCIVA titles and went to the NCAA Championships three times He made the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 1978 when the Waves won their first national championship. He was a four-time all-conference selection (twice on the first team).
Wilde later served as Pepperdine’s men’s volleyball head coach from 1986 through 1988 when Marv Dunphy was coaching the U.S. National Team. Wilde’s Wave teams went 58-27 and won the 1986 national championship.
Wilde was a member of the U.S. National Team and was an alternate on the 1984 Olympic squad. He served as an assistant coach for the U.S. teams at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. He has worked as the men’s head coach at UC San Diego, the women’s head coach at Drake and an assistant women’s coach at Wisconsin.
“The Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame is enriched each year as we continue to add some of the most distinguished and accomplished student-athletes in the program’s history,” said Pepperdine Director of Athletics John Watson in a press release. “These are seven individuals that are very well deserving of this honor. We look forward to honoring them and recognizing their achievements, both what took place at Pepperdine and in their professional lives.”
The Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1980. These seven will join 77 individuals and 12 teams that have already been enshrined.
To be eligible for induction, nominees must have competed, coached for or rendered an extraordinary service to Pepperdine University Athletics. After a list of nominations was gathered, Pepperdine’s Hall of Fame Committee made the decision on this year’s inductees.
