New USA Volleyball Board of Directors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 23, 2009) – Bill Barnum (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Kathy DeBoer (Lexington, Ky.) will take their new positions on the USA Volleyball Board of Directors when it meets on Oct. 30 at Holyoke, Mass.
Barnum, who replaces the independent director position previously held by Steve Simpson, is a general partner of Brentwood Associates Private Equity, a Los Angeles-based private equity investment firm with approximately $1 billion under management. Brentwood specializes in growth-oriented investing, purchasing controlling interests in middle market consumer product companies.
Barnum, who joined Barnum Associates in 1984 and co-founded its private equity practice, has served on the board of directors of many of Brentwood’s portfolio companies including Prince Manufacturing, Bell Sports, Educational Publishing Corporation and Horizon Cellular. He currently serves on the boards of The Teaching Company, Zoe’s Kitchen, Oriental Trading Company, Filson, Quiksilver and Zumiez.

Barnum is a 1976 graduate of Stanford University with an A.B. in economics with honors and distinction, and later graduated from the Stanford Law School and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He currently serves as a trustee of Stanford University, as well as of Harvard-Westlake School, an independent school in Los Angeles.
Barnum is married with three children and resides in southern California.
DeBoer, who fills the spot of John Dunning as the coach director, has served as the executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) since February 2006. Under her leadership, the AVCA membership has grown by 36 percent and its annual convention attendance has increased by nearly 30 percent.
Prior to the AVCA, DeBoer spent 23 years in intercollegiate athletics serving as a coach, administrator and fundraiser. She was on staff at the University of Kentucky for 18 years, first as head women’s volleyball coach and finishing as the senior associate athletics director. DeBoer held the position of commissioner of general services at the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government for three years after her tenure at Kentucky.
A nationally known public speaker on the impact of gender on competitive behavior, DeBoer presents programs on motivation, teamwork and 21st century leadership. She has written on issues of competition, gender, coaching and intercollegiate athletics. Her first book, “Gender and Competition: How Men and Women Approach Work and Play Differently,” was published by Coaches Choice in 2004.
DeBoer holds a bachelor of arts degree in humanities from Michigan State University (1978) and a master’s of business administration degree from University of Kentucky (1988). She is married to Mark Pittman and resides in Lexington, Ky.
Both Barnum and DeBoer will hold their Board terms through June 2013.

Andy Reitinger, the chair of the USA Volleyball Junior Assembly, will represent the juniors at the upcoming board meeting on a temporary basis. The second unfilled board position is the elite beach development board representative, which was vacated when Karch Kiraly stepped down from the board and accepted the assistant coach position with the U.S. Women’s National Team.
