U.S. Men Sweep Mexico at NORCECA Championship

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Oct. 12, 2009) - The U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team opened play at the NORCECA Continental Championship on Monday with a pool-play sweep of Mexico, 25-15, 28-26, 25-16 at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

The U.S. Men (1-0) will continue pool play on Tuesday when they face Panama at 3 p.m. PDT. Mexico (0-1) will face Canada.

Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) paced Team USA on Monday with 16 points on 10 kills, two blocks and four aces. Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) added 11 points on nine kills and two blocks while Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) totaled 11 points on five kills, and a match-high six aces. Tom Hoff (Park Ridge, Ill.) scored nine points on five kills, a match-high three blocks and one ace.

Leonardo Manzo led Mexico with 14 points on a match-high 14 kills.

"I am very proud of the way my players kept their composure in the second set when Mexico put a lot of pressure on us," U.S. Head Coach Alan Knipe (Huntington Beach, Calif.) said. "Obviously we need to clean up some things to reach the level we want to play."

The U.S. Men completed 32 of 71 kill attempts (45 percent) with 10 errors. Rooney competed nine of 17 kill attempts (53 percent) with two errors. Hoff completed five of nine attempts (56 percent) with no errors.

Mexico completed 35 of 82 kill attempts (43 percent) with 17 errors.

The United States out-blocked Mexico 11-5. The U.S. Men scored on 12 aces while Mexico had four.

The U.S. Men were credited with 32 excellent receptions and five faults on 48 attempts (56 percent), led by Lotman with 19 excellents and two faults on 24 attempts (71 percent).

U.S. libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) was credited with 10 digs and five faults on 18 attempts. Setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) was credited with 24 running sets on 58 attempts.

Among other U.S. scorers, David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) totaled five points on three kills and two blocks. Hansen scored three points on two blocks and one ace.

Knipe started Lotman and Rooney at outside hitter, Hoff and Lee at middle blocker, Patak at opposite, Hansen at setter and Lambourne at libero. Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) played as a substitute.
