COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 5, 2009) – USA Volleyball has announced its 2010 High Performance Tryout schedule with 16 total dates on the calendar.

The first tryout takes place on Jan. 1 at the San Mateo Expo Center in San Mateo, Calif. The tryout season concludes in early March at Honolulu with an exact date yet to be determined.

“Every changing new year marks the beginning of a new High Performance tryout season and the process to identify the top, aspiring Olympians within each of the three HP age groups for boys and girls,” said Collin Powers, manager of USA Volleyball High Performance Programs. “This year, that process begins immediately with the Jan. 1 boys’ HP tryout that will be held at the San Mateo Expo Center in conjunction with the No Dinx Boy's Far Westerns bid tournament.”

The tryout fee is $65 for online registration, which will open next week. Registration via fax or e-mail of scanned registration form costs $75. Online, mailed and faxed registration closes the fourth day prior to the tryout at midnight. For example, registration would close Wednesday at midnight for a tryout on Sunday. Walk-up registration costs $100 per athlete trying out.

Refunds will be given for withdrawing from a tryout, less $20 for administrative cost. Athletes may attend more than one tryout. The full tryout fee applies to each tryout attended. The number of tryouts an athlete attends usually will not affect his evaluation; attending more than one tryout is recommended only if your first tryout performance was for some reason below your potential.

The tryouts will have a significant added importance this spring as a new event has populated the 2010 calendar. Aside from the highly popular age group National Teams and developmental teams, the tryouts will assist in determining a team that could possibly represent the United States at the Youth Olympics, a new program created by the International Olympic Committee.

“Along with the announcement of the boys’ 2010 HP tryout schedule, it is also our pleasure to announce that the Olympic dream for 2010 Boys’ Youth age group athletes just got a little closer,” Powers said. “For the first time ever, the International Olympic Committee is holding a Youth Olympic Games in August 2010 in Singapore; and a Boys’ USA Youth Team has been identified as a participating team if we can qualify this team through the NORCECA Zonal qualification process (that is a tournament for countries in North America, Central America and Caribbean).

“This is an exciting time for youth volleyball, USAV High Performance and the pipeline of players and coaches who make up the High Performance Program,” Powers continued. “In addition to the Youth Olympic Games, in 2010 HP again will be offering a wide range of programs, at all levels, from training camps to combined training/competition events.”

The 2010 USA Volleyball High Performance boys’ tryout schedule maintains the core, successful elements of previous years’ schedules, while making a couple of key improvements. Here are some key points:

  • For Northern California, St. Louis, Southern California, Wisconsin and Chicago – USAV will maintain its tryouts in conjunction with major tournaments. This allows athletes traveling to that tournament the opportunity to try out without a separate flight or travel weekend.
  • For the Northeast, USAV will again hold the very successful Buffalo boys’ tryout that was just instituted last year.
  • For the Carolinas, USAV will again hold the very successful Greensboro tryout that was just instituted last year.
  • For the Mid-Atlantic Region, Pennsylvania and Ohio, USAV will be offering the Juniata College tryout and another tryout at George Mason University.
  • For Denver, USAV will be holding our second annual tryout at the Johnson and Wales University gym.
  • USAV will again be holding a second, “stand-alone” tryout in February in Southern California at the Anaheim American Sports Centers facility.
  • USAV’s Phoenix and Honolulu tryouts are not yet finalized, but we will be completed soon.
  • USAV will likely be adding a tryout in Texas the weekend of Jan. 23 – though that is just in the planning stages.

“Importantly, we plan to again run the boys’ Training Camp program level, whereby attending an HP tryout guarantees that you will be invited to participate in a USA program,” Powers said. “It’s important to note that the coaches of the two Training Camps in 2009 included past U.S. Men’s National Team assistant coaches, U.S. Youth National Team coaches, U.S. National Team players and NCAA Division I assistant coaches.”
