Kessy/Ross and Akers/Turner Still Undefeated

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 5, 2009) – The U.S. beach volleyball teams of Jen Kessy and April Ross and Angie Akers and Tyra Turner avoided upset on Thursday and advanced to the third round of the Phuket Thailand Open, part of the Swatch FIVB World Tour.

Only three of the tournament’s top 10-ranked teams remained unbeaten at the end of play on Thursday. Along with top-ranked Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and second-ranked Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.), the fourth-ranked team of Marleen van Iersel and Sanne Keizer from Netherlands is unbeaten.

Four other teams seeded in the top 10 remain alive in the consolation bracket.

Kessy and Ross, the tournament’s defending champions, started the day by defeating Thailand’s 32nd-ranked Julaluk Radarong and Manerat Udomchavee in the first round, 25-15, 25-13 in 41 minutes. In the second round, Kessy and Ross topped Canada’s 16th-ranked Marie-Andree Lessard and Annie Martin, 21-17, 21-14 in 42 minutes.

Kessy and Ross will play 24th-seeded Ying Huang and Xi Zhang of China in Friday’s third round. Zhang won the bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with Chen Xue.

Akers and Turner defeated Ukraine’s 31st-seeded Galyna Osheyko and Svitlana Baburina in the first round, 21-18, 21-19 in 39 minutes. In the second round, Akers and Turner beat Belgium’s 15th-ranked Liesbeth Mouha and Liesbet van Breedam, 21-15, 20-22, 15-12 in 50 minutes.

Akers and Turner will play Russia’s Anastasia Vasina and Ekaterina Khomyakova, seeded 23rd, in Thursday’s third round.

The U.S. team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas), seeded 17th, lost its first-round match to Canada’s Lessard and Martin, 16-21, 21-17, 14-16 in 57 minutes. However, they came back in the consolation bracket to defeat Thailand’s Radarong and Udomchavee, 21-15, 21-12 in 34 minutes.

Fendrick and Ivy will play Belgium’s Mouha and van Breedam in the next round of consolation on Friday.
