Hochevar, Kropp Fall in Final Round of Qualifying

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 4, 2009) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Brittany Hochevar and Jenny Kropp fell in the final round of qualifying for the Phuket Thailand Open on Wednesday.
Competing for the first-time on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) advanced to Wednesday’s qualifying round by defeating the United States’ Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Lisa Rutledge (Vista, Calif.) in Tuesday’s country qualifier.
On Wednesday, Hochevar and Kropp opened by defeating Thailand’s Orradee Phupanee and Aunchalee Yunsuwan, 21-11, 21-13 in 29 minutes.
They followed that by defeating Great Britain’s Denise Johns and Lucy Boulton, 13-21, 21-17, 18-16 in 52 minutes. However, they met their match in the third and final round of qualifying, losing to France’s Deborah Giaoui and Eva Hamzaoui, 18-21, 19-21 in 34 minutes.
The main draw matches in Phuket will begin on Thursday. Americans Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) are the tournament’s top seeds and will face Thailand’s 32nd-ranked Julaluk Radarong and Manerat Udomchavee in the first round.
Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) are ranked second in the event and will play Ukraine’s 31st-seeded Galyna Osheyko and Svitlana Baburina in the first round.
The U.S. team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) are seeded 17th and will play Canada’s Marie-Andree Lessard and Annie Martin, ranked 16th, in the first round.
