U.S. Teams Take Silver, Bronze in Sanya

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 1, 2007) - The U.S. beach volleyball team of Jen Kessy and April Ross won the silver while Angie Akers and Tyra Turner took bronze on Sunday at the Sanya Open, part of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, in Sanya, China.
Top-ranked Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) reached the gold medal match by beating he third-ranked Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) in the semifinals, 22-20, 19-21, 15-11 in 60 minutes.
However Kessy and Ross then lost a battle to the 11th-ranked Swiss team of Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr, 21-17, 20-22, 13-15 in 60 minutes. Kuhn and Zumkehr became the first women's team from Switzerland to win an international "open" Beach Volleyball gold medal
Kessy and Ross, who are now 5-6 in SWATCH FIVB World Tour title matches since 2007, split $21,000 for second-place. The Americans won the 2008 Sanya Open finale with a 21-17, 23-21 victory over China's Ying Huang and Xi Zhang.
Akers and Turner won the bronze by defeating 15th-seeded qualifiers Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti of Italy, 21-15, 21-15 win in 36 minutes. The win earned Akers her first-ever SWATCH FIVB World Tour medal and a share of the $15,000 third-place prize. Turner won the bronze medal at the 2008 Sanya Open with Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.).
