Sitting Teams Open Tournament with Wins

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 29, 2009) – The U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sitting Volleyball Teams both opened the Parapan American Zonal Championship on Thursday with victories over host Canada at the McGill University Athletic Complex in Montreal.

The winners men’s and women’s tournaments will each qualify for the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team defeated Canada 3-0 (25-5, 25-8, 25-14). 

Head Coach Bill Hamiter started Lora Webster (Cave Creek, Ariz.), Katie Holloway (Lake Stevens, Wash.), Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C.), Allison Aldrich (Schuyler, Neb.), Nichole Millage (Champaign, Ill.), Alex Gouldie (St. Paul, Neb.) and libero Kari Miller (Washington, D.C.). 

Substitutes Kendra Lancaster (Westfield, Ill.), Gina McWilliams (The Colony, Texas), Hope Lewellen (Palos Park, Ill.), SuGui Kriss (Ravena, N.Y.) and Michelle Gerlosky (Griffin, Ga.) all saw action in the match. 

Aldrich led all scorers with 12 points on seven kills and five aces. Holloway added 11 points on seven kills, one block, and three aces. Millage scored five points while Gouldie and Erickson each contributed four.

The U.S. Men's Sitting Team also swept its Canadian counterpart, 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-17). 

Hamiter started Brent Rasmussen (Omaha, Neb.), Roderick Green (West Monroe, La.), Eric Duda (Gainesville, Fla.), James Stuck (New Kensington, Pa.), Brad Johnson (Pompano Beach, Fla.), Edgar Laforest (Puerto Rico) and libero Matt Johnson (Omaha, Neb.).
The Canadians came out strong in the first set while the U.S. team started slow. At the first technical timeout, The United States trailed 3-8. 

Canada continued to outscore the U.S. Men’s Sitting Team, leading at the second technical timeout, 9-16. 

Dan Regan (St. Louis, Mo.) entered the set after the second technical timeout.  Behind the serving of Duda and Regan, Team USA came from behind to win, 25-23. Libero Matt Johnson contributed in the turn-around with 67 percent of his passes being perfect. 

Team USA dominated Set 2 with a score of 25-13 and the third set, 25-17. 
Duda and Rasmussen led the scoring with 10 points each.  The offense was well distributed with Laforest, Green and Stuck all scoring eight points. Regan had six points and Brad Johnson earned four.
