Three U.S. Beach Teams Make it to Third Round

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 28, 2009) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Jen Kessy and April Ross and the men’s teams of Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings and Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal have all advanced to the third round of their respective SWATCH FIVB World Tour tournaments after play on Thursday.

Top-ranked Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), who are competing at the US$190,000 Seoul Open, swept their first two matches.

In the first round, they defeated Korea’s 32nd-ranked Hyo-Sil Jang and Ka-Yeon Kim, 2-0 (21-6, 21-6) in 27 minutes. In the second round, they beat 16th seeded Angelica Ljungquist and Karin Lundqvist of Sweden, 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) in 45 minutes.

In Saturday’s third round, Kessy and Ross will face China’s eighth-ranked Ying Huang and Xi Zhang.

The men are competing at the US$190,000 Myslowice Open in Poland.

Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.), seeded 12th, opened tourney play by defeating Switzerland’s 21st-ranked Philip Gabathuler and David Wenger, 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) in 42 minutes. In the second round, the U.S. duo upset Netherlands’ fifth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil, 2-0 (21-19, 21-10) in 39 minutes.

Fuerbringer and Jennings will face Brazil’s fourth-ranked team of Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos in the third round on Friday.

Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), ranked 15th, beat Switzerland’s Sascha Heyer and Patrick Heuscher, seeded 18th, 2-0 (21-17, 22-20) in 42 minutes in the first round. They came back in the longest match of the day to upset Brazil’s second-ranked Pedro Cunha and Pedro Salgado, 2-1 (21-19, 18-21, 15-8) in 58 minutes to reach the third round.

On Saturday, they will play Germany’s seventh-seeded David Klemperer and Eric Koreng in the third round.
