COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 24, 2009) Updated on May 28, 2009 with new photo – U.S. beach volleyball player and two-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh gave birth to her first child, a boy named Joseph Michael Jennings, on Friday, May 22.
Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.), 30, is married to U.S. beach volleyball player Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.), 33. Jennings had completed play Friday in the AVP event in Huntington Beach, Calif., with partner Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) when Walsh went into labor.
"We could not be more thrilled to welcome Joseph into the world," Walsh told People Magazine. "It’s the most incredible feeling. We are already so in love with him and it’s such an amazing, special moment for our family."
The baby weighed 8 lbs, 10 ounces at birth. Jennings told the LA Times that the middle name Michael was used in honor of U.S. beach volleyball player Mike Whitmarsh, who died in February.
Walsh has won two Olympic gold medals and three world championships with partner Misty May Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.). Both have taken time off from competition thus far in 2009. Treanor continues to rehabilitate the Achilles tendon she ruptured while competing on the TV show Dancing with the Stars in 2008.
