COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 21, 2009) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) pulled off two upsets on Thursday to advance to the third round of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Osaka, Japan.
Akers and Turner, ranked 26th, opened play by defeating Germany’s Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig, seeded 7th, 2-1 (21-19, 14-21, 15-10) in 48 minutes. Goller and Ludwig had made it to the semifinals of FIVB World Tour events in Brasilia and Shanghai this year.
It was Akers first-ever SWATCH main draw match win as she had never placed higher than 41st in an FIVB World Tour event.
“I love playing here in Japan,” said Turner, who is playing with Akers for the first time this season, in an FIVB release. “We are delighted with our win today as the Germans are a quality team with impressive credentials. It was a tough match as Sara and Laura came back strong in the second set. I am excited for Angie as she won her first main draw match.”
In the second round, Akers and Turner defeated 23rd ranked Hana Klapalova and Tereza Petrova of the Czech Republic, 2-0 (21-16, 21-11) in 31 minutes.
On Friday, Akers and Turner will face Brazil’s second-ranked Carolina Salgado and Maria Clara Rufino to try to advance to the quarterfinals.
