U.S. Men's Update - May 6

ANAHEIM, Calif. (May, 6, 2009) – U.S. Men’s Volleyball players Lloy Ball (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Clay Stanley (Honolulu) are champions again as their Russian team, Zenit Kazan, won the country’s Super League title with a 3-0 match victory over Iskra Odintsovo in the final round.
Zenit Kazan took the third victory, 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21), at home on May 2. Stanley led Kazan with 14 points on 10 kills and four aces. Ball had two points on two kills and two blocks. The team converted 47 out of 92 (52 percent) attack attempts into points.
Ball and Stanley have extended their contracts with Kazan for another year.

Fakel Novy Urengoi, including U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) and outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.), finished third in the Super League with a 3-0 match victory over Dinamo Moscow.
Visiting Fakel Novy Urengoi won the final match, 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13) on May 2. Rooney scored 15 points in the final on 13 kills and two blocks. Hansen scored five points on three kills, one block and one ace. Fakel Novy Urengoi converted 56 of 118 attack attempts (47 percent) into points.

In the series to determine the fifth-place team, which will qualify for European cup competition, Lokomotiv Belogorie, which features U.S. libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) defeated Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, which includes U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), three matches to one.
On May 2, host Novosibirsk, trailing 0-2 in matches, took a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21) victory over Belogorie. Priddy led all scorers with 20 points on 14 kills, four blocks and two aces.
However, Belogorie came back on May 3 with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 31-29) win. Priddy scored 12 points on 12 kills.

U.S. middle blocker Tom Hoff (Park Ridge, Ill.) and his Greek team Olympiacos have a 2-1 match lead over league champion and rival Panathinaikos in their league championship series.
On April 30, host Olympiacos defeated Panathinaikos, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-14) to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Hoff scored 6.5 points on four kills, 1.5 blocks and one ace.
On May 4, host Panathinaikos held off Olympiacos, 3-2 (14-25, 26-24, 25-21, 18-25, 16-14). Hoff was credited with 7.33 points on five kills, 1.33 blocks and one ace.
The teams will play again on May 7.
Finikas Sirou, featuring U.S. middle blocker Matt Denmark (Edmond, Okla.), defeated Aris Marmouris AE, two matches to one in the series to decide fifth place. Finikas won the right to play in the Challenge Cup next season.
In the first match on April 30, visiting Finikas won 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17). Denmark had 10.5 points on eight kills, 1.5 blocks and one ace.
In the second match on May 4, visiting Aris won 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12). Denmark scored 7.5 points on five kill and 2.5 blocks.
Finikas came back on May 5 to defeat host Aris, 3-2 (17-25, 26-24, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11). Denmark scored 13.5 points on 11 kills and 2.5 blocks.
