U.S. Beach Teams Place First, Third at NORCECA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 29, 2009) – The U.S. men’s team of Mike Bruning (Tucson, Ariz.) and Jason Wight (West Springfield, Va.) won the first leg of the NORCECA Beach Circuit, taking the gold medal on Sunday in the Cayman Islands before approximately 1,500 fans.

NORCECA LogoThe U.S. women’s team of Kristen Batt (Venice, Fla.) and Megan Wallin (Siesta Key, Fla.) placed third on Sunday.

Bruning and Wight defeated the Cuban team of Sergio Gonzalez and Karell Peña in straight sets (22-20, 21-17). The first set was a battle with nine tied-scores.

Ahren Cadieux and Richard Van Huizen of Canada edged Orlando Irizarry and Roberto Rodriguez of Puerto Rico (16-21, 21-15, 15-12) to win the bronze medal.

Wight and Bruning defeated Cadieux and Van Huizen in the semifinals (25-23, 21-19).

In the women’s bracket, Batt and Wallin defeated Guatemala’s Maria Jose Orellana and Anna Ramirez (15-21, 21-17, 15-9) for the bronze medal.

Batt and Wallin fell to Vanessa Virgen and Polet Cruz from Mexico in the semifinals.

The U.S. team of Sean Allstot (Grass Valley, Calif.) and Kevin Lynch (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) finished seventh in the men’s bracket while the United States’ Jennifer Sharp (Los Angeles) and Jennifer Lombardi (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) placed eighth for the women.
