COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 26, 2009) – More than 900 boys’ volleyball players tried out for 2009 high performance teams and programs, USA Volleyball has announced. The number exceeds that of 2008.
Selections have been posted to the USA Volleyball web site using player numbers.
The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team selections have not yet been completed.
Players’ whose numbers have been posted to the USA Volleyball web site have until April 3 to confirm that they wish to participate.
Junior players are those that were born in 1989-90. Youth players are those that were born in 1991-92. The select age group includes those born in 1993 or later.
“We were excited to see so many talented boys’ players trying out for our high performance teams,” said Collin Powers, USAV manager of high performance indoor national programs. “We believe this is going to be a very successful year for these teams and programs.”
The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team will compete at the FIVB World Championships on July 31-Aug. 9 in Pune, India. The head coach will be Shawn Patchell (BYU) with assistance from John Hawks (Long Beach State) and another coach still to be determined.
The U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team (BYNT) will compete at the FIVB World Championships on Aug. 28-Sept. 6 in Bassano del Grappa and Jesolo, Italy. The head coach will be Andy Read (Long Beach State) with assistance from Sean Byron (Ohio State) and Dan Friend (Lewis).
“The 2009 BYNT is one of the best we have ever put together,” Powers said.
Fifty players in the Select A1 program and 30 in the Youth A2 program will train with top coaches and compete at the High Performance (HP) Championships on July 16-26 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The Continental Team Program, which is new for 2009, will be for athletes who do not qualify for the Select A1 or Youth A2 teams. These players, which will be drawn from USA Volleyball regions that do not run boys’ high performance programs, will train and compete for a shorter time at the HP Championships.
Players at the A3 level will attend a camp at either Ohio State University, Long Beach State University or in Wisconsin Dells, Wis.
Those not selected for the A3 camps will compete at the Training Camp level. These camps will be held concurrently with the Long Beach State and Wisconsin Dells A3 camps.
