ANAHEIM, Calif. (March 23, 2009) – Lokomotiv Belogorie, the Russian Super League team that includes U.S. libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) won the CEV Cup on March 22, defeating Greece’s Panathinaikos, 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20) in the final before an estimated crowd of 15,000 in Athens, Greece.
In the semifinals, Belogorie defeated Spain’s Unicaja Almeria, 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-23).

Belogorie and the rest of the Russian Super League will begin the playoffs on March 25.

China Retains Men’s Head Coach
Former Chinese national team player Jianan Zhou will remain as head coach of the men’s national team, the Chinese Volleyball Association announced at a press conference on Monday (March 23).
The U.S. Men will face China in World League pool play this summer. The two teams will square off on June 26-27 in San Jose, Calif., and again on July 3-4 in China.
Zhou said his main goal for his new four-year term will be to earn a place at the London Olympic Games in 2012. He also vowed to lead the Chinese to gold at the 2009 Asian Volleyball Championship and claim a berth at the 2010 FIVB World Championship.
The 45-year-old Zhou became Chinese men’s head coach in December 2005.
The Turkish team Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediye, which features U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) and middle blocker Ryan Millar (Palmdale, Calif.), finished the regular season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-16) victory over MEF Okullari.
Millar played the whole match and scored 14 points on eight kills, five blocks and one ace. Touzinsky started the first two sets and scored three points on two kills and one ace.
Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediye finished the season in third place with a 17-5 record and will play Galatasary in the first round of the playoffs, which start March 27.
U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.) helped his Turkish team Fenerbahce Istanbul defeat Maliye Milli Piyango Ankara, 3-2 (25-19, 12-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-10) in its final regular season match. Billings scored 19 points on 17 kills and two blocks.
U.S. middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) and his Italian Serie A1 team Trenkwalder Modena defeated Rpa-Luigibacchi.It Perugia, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-16) in the final match of the regular season. Lee scored nine points on three kills, four blocks and two aces.
Trenkwalder (11-15) finishes the regular season in 10th place in the league and will not advance to the playoffs.
Sisley Treviso (12-14), which includes U.S. outside hitter Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) won its last two matches of the regular season and will advance to the playoffs as the eighth-place team. It will play league-winner Lube Banca Marche Macerata (19-7) in the playoffs beginning March 25.
