COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 30, 2009) – The USA Volleyball women’s beach team of Jen Kessy and April Ross maintained its dominance and secured a place atop Pool A on the fifth day of play at the SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Stavanger, Norway.

Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) defeated 24th-seeded Inese Jursone and Inguna Minusa of Latvia, 2-0 (21-13, 21-14) in a 35-minute, Pool A center-court match. The victory gives them a 3-0 record, good for the top spot in Pool A, and secures their number one seed for the 32-team elimination bracket.

The pair prepared intensely for the match, not wanting to overlook a dangerous opponent.

“We prepared for the match like it was the final. We always play three-set matches against them, but today we managed to make the right pressure,” Ross said.

Kessy was pleased with the energy on the center court. “There's such a good atmosphere here at the center court, so we want to play more here,” she said.

Sixth-seeded Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) managed to lock up the top spot in Pool F despite losing to 19th-seeded Angelica Ljungquist and Karin Lundqvist of Sweden, 0-2 (17-21, 19-21) in 45 minutes. Akers and Turner finished with a 2-1 record, tied with 43rd-seeded Isabelle Forrer and Sarah Schmocker of Switzerland. However, Akers and Turner had defeated Forrer and Schmocker, 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) earlier in the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships.

The duo of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) defeated Ragnhild Aas and Siri Bjørkesett of Norway, 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) in a 38 minute match. They will have to wait until Wednesday, the last day of pool play, to find out if their 1-2 record is good enough to earn them a spot in the next round.

The 32-team single-elimination brackets for men and women begin Thursday. The women’s medal matches will be July 4 followed by the men’s medal matches on July 5, with the winning teams in each gender sharing the $60,000 first-place prize.

Matches can be seen live at Universal Sports.
