MIAMI, Fla. (June 27, 2009) – Peru defeated Costa Rica 25-14, 25-10, 25-11 on the second day of pool play during the Women’s Pan American Cup being held through July 4 at Miami.

Peru (2-0) was led by captain Leyla Chihuan’s 15 points that included 10 kills, three aces and two blocks. Patricia Soto, Yulissa Zamudio and Carla Ortiz all added 12 points in the victory.

Costa Rica (0-2) was led by its captain Verania Willis, who had 10 points all on kills. Irene Fonseca Avila added five points in the loss.

After Costa Rica came back from a 5-1 deficit in the opening set with four unanswered points, Peru responded with an 11-3 run to help put the set away at 25-14. Peru continued the pressure in the next sets with victories of 25-10 and 25-11.

Peru dominated the stats with advantages of 45-22 in kills, 10-2 in blocks and 7-3 in aces.

“I am happy with our hard work and progress,” Peru Head Coach Kim Choel Yong said through assistant coach Natalia Malaga Dibos. “We have been training very hard with aggressive serves, along with training to prepare for the FIVB World Championship qualification.”

“I thought our team started out well, but serve-receive has been a problem for us,” Costa Rica Head Coach B. Godinez Blanco said. “Peru has a lot of power in the service game, and we knew ahead of time that our weakness was in serve-receive.”

Peru plays Puerto Rico at 5:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, the third of five consecutive pool play matches before the classification round. Costa Rica returns to the court at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday versus Guatemala.
