COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Volleyball’s women’s beach teams went 2-1 on Friday at the SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Stavanger, Norway.

The top-seeded team of Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had an easy time against 48th-ranked Ragnhild Aas and Siri Bjørkesett of Norway, defeating them 2-0 (21-10, 21-13) in 37 minutes.

Sixth-ranked Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) also swept their match, defeating  Switzerland’s 43rd-seeded Isabelle Forrer and Sarah Schmocker, 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) in 32 minutes.

The United States’ 25th-seeded Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) had a tougher time, falling, 1-2 (19-21, 21-19, 10-15) to Latvia’s 24th-ranked Inese Jursone and Inguna Minusa in 53 minutes.

After the match, Ivy said it was a learning experience for the young team.

“This will definitely help the next time we play. I keep a book on every team we play – domestic and international. I write down things I remember and what we do,” she said.

“I have a master’s in chemistry; so I’m very by the numbers. I look at stats; I look at everything.  I always keep notes so I can look at a date and analyze it and extrapolate some kind of answer and it usually helps me in the long run, besides just playing a guessing game out there.”

The U.S. women’s team of Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.), ranked fourth, will begin play on Saturday against Great Britain’s 45th-seeded Zara Dampney and Shauna Mullin.

All four U.S. men’s beach teams will also play on Saturday.

Defending world champions Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded second, will open against Angola’s Abreu Morais and Mario Silva, ranked 47th.

Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.), ranked 17th, will play Italy’s Matteo Varnier and Paolo Nicolai , seeded 32nd.

Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.), ranked 21st, will face Switzerland’s Sascha Heyer and Patrick Heuscher, seeded 28th.

Olympians Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), ranked 23rd, will face New Zealand’s 26th-ranked Kirk Lochhead and Jason Pitman.

Matches can be seen live at Universal Sports.
