“The Netherlands played very well,” Patak said. “They have a young team with outside hitters that have developed very well. We did not play like we can.”
Netherlands’ leading scorer was 6-6 outside hitter Robert Horstink with 18 points on 16 kills and two aces. However, 7-foot opposite Kay van Dijk added 14 points on 11 kills and three blocks. At 6-10, middle blocker Wytze Kooistra scored 11 points on nine kills, one block and one ace.

In the first set, the Dutch held an 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout (TTO) after a block by van Dijk. Looking for more height in the second set, Knipe started the 6-foot-10 Anderson for the 6-6 Touzinsky. Later in the set, Billings substituted for Patak.
The second set stayed close until the score was tied 14-14. Two points from left-handed Netherlands captain Jeroen Trommel gave the Dutch a 16-14 lead and two U.S. errors increased it to 18-15.
