COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 31, 2009) - U.S. beach teams had another successful day at the A1 Grand Slam 09 presented by Volksbank in Klagenfurt, Austria, which runs from July 27-Aug. 1.
Two U.S. teams advanced to the semifinals of the women's draw, while all three U.S. teams advanced into the second elimination round of the men's draw.
Second-seeded Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) beat 21st-ranked Cristine Santanna and Andrezza Martins das Chagas of Georgia, 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) in their round 2 match, advancing to the third round where they bested seventh-seeded Marleen Van Iersel and Sanne Keizer of the Netherlands, 2-0 (21-17, 21-19). The victory sets up a semifinal match against U.S. teammates Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.).
Branagh and Youngs, who are ranked fourth, advanced to the third round after a 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) win over 25th-seeded Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau of Germany. They faced 8th-ranked Ana Paula Connelly and Shelda Bede of Brazil in third round where they disposed of the Brazilians, 2-0 (21-19, 21-10).
Fifth-seeded Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) also advanced to the third round after defeating 18th-seeded Vasiliki Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece, 2-0 (21-11, 21-17). They were eliminated in the third round after a 0-2 (18-21, 18-21) loss to third-ranked Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva of Brazil.
Twenty-third-ranked Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) and Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) lost in the second round to Ana Paula and Shelda, 2-0 (18-21, 15-21).
The women's semifinals will take place Saturday (Aug. 1), followed immediately by the championship match.
On the men's side, Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) finished off pool play on a high note, defeating 14th-seeded Sascha Heyer and Patrick Heuscher of Switzerland, 2-0 (21-18, 21-13). Their 3-0 record earned them a bye into the second elimination round where they will play sixth-seeded David Klemperer and Eric Koreng of Germany
Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) beat Klemperer and Koreng, 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) in their final pool play match on Friday and earned a bye to the second elimination round where they will face seventh-ranked Benjamin Insfran and Pedro Salgado of Brazil.
Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) fell to top-ranked Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann of Germany, 2-1 (20-22, 21-17, 15-9) but bounced back in the first elimination round to pull off one of the biggest upsets of day, defeating fifth-ranked Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego of Brazil, 2-1 (18-21, 27-25, 15-13). They will face second-ranked Harley Marques Silva and Alison Cerutti of Brazil in the second elimination round.
All second-round games will be played Saturday, followed immediately by the third elimination round.
