Jul 29 U.S. Women See Success on First Day of Play in Austria

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 29, 2009) - Three out of four U.S. women's beach teams went undefeated on the first day of pool play at the A1 Grand Slam 09 presented by Volksbank in Klagenfurt, Austria. The tournament runs from July 27-Aug. 1.

The teams of Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.)/April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.)/Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.), and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.)/Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.)  all went 2-0 on the first day of play. Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Tex.) and Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) dropped to a 0-2 record.

Kessy and Ross, who are seeded second, beat 31st-seeded Miwa Aseo and Takemi Nishibori of Japan, 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) in their first match, and followed that up with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) win over 18th-seeded Vasiliki Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece. They will play 15th-ranked Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen of Norway on Thursday in their last pool play match.

Fifth-seeded Akers and Turner started off their day with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) win over 28th-ranked Galyna Osheyko and Svitlana Baburina of the Ukraine and went on to beat 21st-ranked Cristine Santanna and Andrezza Martins das Chagas of Georgia, 2-0 (21-13, 21-14). Next, they face 12th-seeded Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany.

Branagh and Youngs, who were seeded fourth, defeated 29th-seeded Susan Blundell and Anna Scarlett of New Zealand 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) in their first match. In their second match they beat 20th-ranked Isabelle Forrer and Sarah Schmocker of Switzerland 2-0 (21-13, 21-14). They will take on 13th-seeded Liesbet Van Breedam and Liesbeth Mouha of Belgium in their final match of pool play.

23rd-ranked Fendrick and Ivy were unable to match that success, falling to 10th-ranked Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger of Austria 1-2 (21-19, 17-21, 7-15). In their second match of the day they lost to 7th-ranked Marleen Van Iersel and Sanne Keizer of the Netherlands 1-2 (22-20, 15-21, 15-17). Their next match is against 26th-ranked Cornelia Rimser and Magdalena Jirak of Austria.

Pool play will conclude July 30, with the first elimination round beginning the same day

Men's pool play matches at the A1 Grand Slam will begin Thursday. Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who are coming off a gold medal win at the World Series 13 Grand Chelem in Marseille, France, are seeded third and will face 30th-ranked Anders Lund Hoyer and Bo Soderberg of Denmark, in their first match.

Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) earned the 11th seed and will take on 22nd-seeded Jialu Li and Linyin Xu of China.
