U.S. Beach Teams Prepare for Final Grand Slam Event

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 28, 2009)- Several USA Volleyball beach teams are set to compete in the final Grand Slam tournament on the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour, the A1 Grand Slam 09 presented by Volksbank in Klagenfurt, Austria from July 27-Aug. 1.
The tournament comes days after the conclusion of the World Series 13 Grand Chelem in Marseille, France, which saw Americans Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) win the gold medal for the men, and Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) claim gold for the women.
Pool play at the A1 Grand Slam 09 begins Wednesday. Ross and Kessy received the second seed, and were placed into Pool B where they will take on the 31st-seeded Miwa Aseo and Takemi Nishibori of Japan in their first match.
Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) earned the fourth seed and will take on 29th-seeded Susan Blundell and Anna Scarlett of New Zealand in their first match of Pool D.
Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) earned the fifth seed and were placed into Pool E where they will face off against 28th-seeded Galyna Osheyko and Svitlana Baburina of the Ukraine.
Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Tex.) and Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) had to compete in the qualification tournament. They defeated Natacha Rigobert and Elodie Li Yuk Lo of Mauritius, 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) in their first match, and bested Alice Rohkamper and Heike Jensen of Australia 2-1 (19-21, 24-22, 16-14) to qualify for the main draw.
They were placed into Pool G with the 23rd seed and will play 10th-seeded Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger of Austria in their first match.
Pool play begins on July 29 and will continue on July 30.
The men's draw has yet to be announced, but the teams of Rogers/Dalhausser, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) /Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Fla.), and Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.)/Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) will all compete in the main draw.
