Manhattan Beach hosts USA Beach Junior Tour Open Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 27, 2009) -Junior Beach volleyball teams from California and Arizona descended on Manhattan Beach, Calif. to take part in the USA Beach Junior Tour Open Championships on July 25.

The tournament is part of the USA Beach Volleyball Junior Tour, a series of beach volleyball events held around the country. Age divisions range from under-12 to under-20.

Alyssa Anderson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Lara Dysktra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) took first place in the Girls' U-18 Division with a 21-14 win over Kianna Niu (Murriteta, Calif.) and Libby Fontanilla (Corona, Calif.). Dysktra was a member of the U.S. team that competed at the 2008 FIVB Youth World Championships. Ashley Tennant (Long Beach, Calif.), who won silver at the 2008 USA Beach Junior Tour Championships, and Bojana Jordorovic (Irvine, Calif.) took third place with a 21-11 win.

Amanda Yamate (Torrance, Calif.) and Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) won the U-16 Division by defeating Christine Irvin (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Skylar Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), sister of Lara, 21-18. Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Alexas Strange (San Clemente, Calif.) came in third with a 21-12 victory.

Taylor Johnson (Temecula, Calif.) and Makayla Taylor (Downey, Calif.) were tops in the U-14 Division winning 21-18 over Amanda Benson (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) and Sarah Sponcil (Phoenix, Ariz.). Elise Zappia (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Audrey Castro (Long Beach, Calif.) finished third with a 1-0 (21-12) win.

In the U-12 Division, Jordan Anderson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Victoria Svorinic (Phoenix, Ariz.) defeated Olivia Zelon (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Natalie Anselmo (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), 21-13 for the top spot.  In third place, Abril Bustamente (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Sophia Gayton (Palos Verdes, Calif.) won by forfeit.

On the boys' side, Taylor Sander (Norco, Calif.) and John Caroompas (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) defeated Tein Le (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brandon Fuimaono (Long Beach, Calif.), 21-12 to win the U-18 Division. Sander is a member of the 2009 Boys' Youth National Training Team and hopes to qualify for a spot on the teams that will travel to Italy to compete in the FIVB Boy's Youth World Championships on Aug. 28-Sept. 6. Caroompas won the 2008 AAU Player of the Year award. The duo also won the 2009 AAU Junior Beach Volleyball National Championships. Le is a member of the U.S. Junior (U-21) Beach National Training Team. Sander and Caroompas defeated Le and Fuimaono in the U-16 division of the 2008 USA Beach Volleyball Tour Championship. UC-Irvine-bound Connor Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Dillon Auxier (Huntington Beach, Calif.), also a member of the U.S. Junior (U-21) Beach National Training Team, grabbed third place with a 21-16 win.

In the U-16 division, Kyle Bailey (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Vinnie Rios (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) took top honors with a 21-11 victory over Chris Long (Tustin, Calif.) and Danny McCarty (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Rios was part of the duo that won the U-14 Division championship in 2008, defeating Bailey and his partner. Adam Murray (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Erik Reed (Long Beach, Calif.) earned third place with a 21-6 win.

Nick Valles (Lamirada, Calif.) and Brenden Sander (Norco, Calif.) earned first place in the U-14 Division, defeating Grant Chalmers (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Brendan Hong (Palos Verdes, Calif.), 21-15. Riley Mallon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Erik Sikes (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) took third place with a 21-12 win.

The U-12 Division saw Joshua Tuaniga (Hemet, Calif.) and Torey Defalco (Fallbrook, Calif.) earned top honors with a 21-17 win over Andy Huchel (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Casey McGarry (Manhattan Beach, Calif.). Roy McFarland (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Turner Longyear (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) came in third with a 21-17 victory.

The next USA Junior Beach Tour Event will be the North Coast Open on Aug. 1 in Chicago, Ill.
