U.S. Women's Junior Team Finishes 12th at Worlds

COLORADO SPRINGS  , Colo. (July 25, 2009) - The U.S. Women's Junior National Team ended the 2009 FIVB World Championships on a down note as it fell to Czech Republic, 0-3 (13-25 13-25 16-25) on Saturday in Tijuana, Mexico and finished the tournament in 12th place (2-6).

Morgan Broekhuis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the U.S. Junior Women with six points each. Each had five kills while Broekhuis had an ace and Frederick scored on a block.

Tereza Vanzurova paced Czech Republic with 17 points on 15 kills and two blocks.

"The Czech team played very good and they kept getting better and better," U.S. Head Coach Paula Weishoff said. "There's not much to say about matches like that. They simply played better than us. There are games like that."

Czech Republic out-blocked the United States 6-4 and scored on eight aces, as opposed to two for Team USA. The U.S. Junior women were also hurt by 17 hitting errors.

Among other U.S. scorers, Hayley Spelman (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Alexis Olgard (Spokane, Wash.) each scored five points on four kills and one block. Karissa Cook (Santa Cruz, Calif.) and Alexandra Hunt (Granger, Ind.) each scored three points. Cook had one kill, one block and one ace. Hunt had three kills.

Amanda Dowdy (Lexington, Texas) scored two points on two kills and Sara Shaw (Austin, Texas) scored one point on one kill.

Kelsey Black (Amarillo, Texas) was credited with 13 excellent receptions in 33 attempts. Hunt added seven excellents on 16 attempts.

Weishoff started Hunt and Shaw at outside hitter, Dowdy and Olgard at middle blocker, Broekhuis at opposite, Bateman at setter and Black at libero.

Frederick started the second and third sets at outside hitter for Shaw. Spelman started the third set at opposite for Broekhuis. Ashleigh McCord (Wylie, Texas) and Cook both played as substitutes.
