Action Continues on Day 3 of HP Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 24, 2009) – Three days of competition have been completed at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, with a record 92 teams participating in the event at the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Florida. Playoff brackets have been set in several divisions.

In the Women’s International Junior Division, the gold playoff will feature USA Youth Red, which won its pool with a 6-0 record, against the Florida Region (5-1) and Manitoba (6-0) versus Team Alberta (4-2). The silver playoff will have Puerto Rico (4-2) playing the Iowa Region (4-2) and Dominican Republic (4-2) facing USA Select Red (3-3). The bronze playoff will see Nova Scotia (2-4) face Italy’s Volleypro (1-5) and USA Junior Red (2-4) go up against USA Youth Blue (1-5).

Playoffs for the Girls’ International Youth Division will be determined on Saturday.

In the Girls’ National Youth Division, the gold playoff will have USA Continental Youth Red (5-0) playing Florida Region Blue (5-1) and the Oklahoma Region (5-0) playing the Sun Country Region (5-0). The silver playoff will feature USA Continental Youth White (3-2) against the Garden Empire Region (2-4) and the Lakeshore Region (3-2) against Puerto Rico (2-3). The bronze playoff will see the Chesapeake Region (2-3) take on Northern California White (1-4) and USA Continental Select Red (2-3) will face the Carolina Region (2-4).

In the gold playoff for the Girls’ National Select Division, the Keystone Region will play the Badger Region on one side, while Florida Region Red will play Southern California Red on the other. In the silver playoff, Northern California Red will play the Iowa Region and the Ohio Valley Region will face the Lone Star Region Blue. In the bronze playoff, USA Continental Select White will go up against the Puget Sound Region while Southern California Blue will face USA Continental Select Blue.

In the International Boys’ Youth Division, the gold playoff will feature USA Youth Blue (5-0) against USA Youth Red (3-1) and USA Youth White (4-0) against the Aloha Region (3-1). The silver playoff will have the Florida Region (3-2) playing USA Continental Youth Red (1-4) and USA Select Red (3-2) versus the Ohio Valley Region (1-4). The bronze playoff will see USA Continental Youth White (3-2) take on the Northern California Region (0-5) and USA Continental Youth Blue (2-2) will play Puerto Rico (0-5).

In the Boys’ National Youth Division, USA Select White (2-0) will play USA Select Blue (1-1) in one gold playoff while USA Continental Select Red (2-0) will play the Badger Region (1-1) in the other. In the silver playoff, USA Continental Select White (2-1) will play USA Select Silver (1-2), with the winner facing the Aloha Region (0-2). The Florida Region (3-0) will play the Carolina Region (0-3), with the winner playing USA Select Gold (0-2).

Along with 27 teams from the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline competing in the event, half of USA Volleyball’s 40 regions have sent Regional High Performance Teams to participate. Among the 20 USAV Regions participating are Aloha Region, Arizona Region, Badger Region, Carolina Region, Chesapeake Region, Florida Region, Garden Empire Region, Gulf Coast Region, Intermountain Region, Iowa Region, Iroquois Empire Region, Keystone Region, Lakeshore Region, Lone Star Region, Northern California Region, Ohio Valley Region, Oklahoma Region, Puget Sound Region, Southern California Region and Sun Country Region.

Four countries outside the United States are sending teams to compete in the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships including Dominican Republic, Canada (province teams of Nova Scotia, Alberta, Manitoba competing), Italy and Puerto Rico.

The USAV High Performance Championships continues through July 26. The finals for the Women’s International Junior Division, Girls’ International Youth Division, Boys’ International Youth Division and Boys’ National Youth/Select Division will be played July 25. The Girls’ National Youth Division and Girls’ National Select Division will wrap up the tournament with championships on July 26.
