Two U.S. Beach Teams Advance in Moscow

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 16, 2009) –Two U.S. women’s beach teams received byes to the second round of the 2009 Moscow Women’s Grand Slam, part of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, in Moscow Russia, while one bowed out in the first round.

The U.S. teams of Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.)/April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.)/Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) both won their final pool play matches, earning them the top spot in their respective pools, and advancing them to the second round of the tournament.

Kessy and Ross defeated Daniela Gioria/Giulia Momoli of Italy in their final pool play match 2-0 (21-19, 21-16). They will face Sara Montagnolli and Barbara Hansel of Austria in the second round on July 17.

Akers and Turner defeated Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger of Austria 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) in their final pool play match and will face Hana Klapalova and Tereza Petrova of the Czech Republic in the second round.

Lauren Fendrick and Ashley Ivy also won their last pool play match, defeating Anna Vozakova and Ekaterina  Khomyakova of Russia  2-0 (21-15, 21-16). However, their 1-2 record was not good enough to earn them a bye to the second round.  They faced Austrians Sara Montagnolli and Barbara Hansel, ranked 21st, in the first round where they lost 0-2 (19-21, 18-21).

Play continues Friday with rounds two and three.
