COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 15, 2009) – The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team picked up two important wins over Slovenia and Russia on Wednesday at the Eurocup in Roermond, Netherlands and will play host Netherlands in the tournament final on Thursday.

The second time around proved successful for the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team as it avenged an earlier loss to the Slovenians.  The American women won, 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19) and advanced into the Championship Bracket as the top seed from its pool.

“We played a complete match today,” U.S.  Head Coach Bill Hamiter (Bethany, Okla.) said. “The team was relaxed and in rhythm. Our game plan was executed well and the result was a critical win in this tournament. The players were very composed under pressure and played well as a team.”

Lora Webster (Cave Creek, Ariz.) led the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team with 14 points on eight kills, three blocks and three aces followed by Allison Aldrich (Schuyler, Neb.) with 13 points on eight kills, one block and four aces. Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C.) added 10 points and Katie Holloway (Lake Stevens, Wash.) scored nine.

The victory over Slovenia advanced the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team to the first round of bracket play on Wednesday, where it overwhelmed Russia, 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-10).

The Americans came out quickly and dominated the first set from start to finish. This momentum carried on through the second set and the third set was decided quickly as Team USA proved too much for the outmatched Russians. Leading scorers for the balanced U.S. squad were Holloway with 12 points on eight kills and four blocks and Erickson with 11 points on eight kills, two blocks and one ace.

“The match strategy was executed perfectly,” Head Coach Bill Hamiter said. “We never allowed Russia a chance to play the style of game they normally have success with. It was a wonderful win and we are excited about the finals tomorrow against the Netherlands.”

Thursday’s semifinal will be a rematch of the semifinal of the Paralympic Games held in Beijing where Team USA handed the Dutch a 3-2 loss on their way to winning the silver medal.

The finals will begin at 4 p.m. local time in Roermond.
