Two Women's Beach Teams Win in Moscow

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 15, 2009) -Two out of three USA Volleyball women's beach teams went undefeated in the opening round of main draw play at the 2009 Moscow Women's Grand Slam, part of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour in Moscow, Russia.
The teams of Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.)/April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.)/Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) went 2-0, winning both of their matches on the day.
Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.)/Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) went 0-2 in pool play.
Second-seeded Kessy and Ross took on Shinako Tanaka/ Hiromi Suzuki of Japan, whom they defeated 2-0 (21-13, 21-14). They went on to defeat Marie-Andrée Lessard/ Annie Martin of Canada 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) in their second match of the day. Kessy and Ross will take on Daniela Gioria/Giulia Momoli of Italy on Thursday in their final pool play match.
Sixth-seeded Akers and Turner defeated Australia's Becchara Palmer/ Heike Jensen in their first match, 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 15-13). They defeated Geeske Banck/Anja Gunther of Germany in their second match, 2-1 (23-25, 21-18, 15-10). They will face Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger of Austria tomorrow in their final pool play match.
Fendrick and Ivy had a tougher time, falling to Xi Zhang/Ying Huang of China 0-2 (12-21, 18-21) and top-seeded Talita Da Rocha Antunes/ Maria Antonelli of Brazil 1-2 (17-21, 21-19, 12-15). They will face Anna Vozakova/Ekaterina Khomyakova of Russia on Thursday in their last pool play match.
Pool play will conclude Thursday with the first round being played the same day.
