U.S. Women's Beach Teams to Play in Moscow

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 14, 2009) - Three USA Volleyball women’s beach teams are scheduled to compete this week at the US $600,000 Moscow Grand Slam in Russia, part of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour.
World champions Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) are ranked second after finishing tied for fifth in Gstaad, Switzerland on Saturday. They will open pool play on Wednesday against Japan’s Hiromi Suzuki and Shinako Tanaka, ranked 31st. After that, they will face Canada’s 18th-seeded Marie-Andrée Lessard and Annie Martin.
Sixth-seeded Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Tuner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.) will open pool play Wednesday against Australia’s Becchara Palmer and Heike Jensen, ranked 27th. Later Wednesday, they will play Germany’s Geeske Banck and Anja Günther, ranked 22nd.
Finally, 17th-ranked Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Tex.) and Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) will take on China’s Ying Huang and Zhang Xi, ranked 16th, in their first pool play match. They will then face top-seeded Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli of Brazil.
The single-elimination bracket will begin Thursday with 24 teams advancing from pool play. The women’s semifinals and medal matches will be played Saturday as the winning team shares the $43,500 first-place prize.
