COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 1, 2009) – Seven out of eight USA Volleyball beach teams have advanced to the Round of 32 at the SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Stavanger, Norway.
Only the duo of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas), who finished third in their pool on Tuesday, did not advance to the Round of 36.
Wednesday was the final day of pool play with five U.S. teams scheduled to compete.
Second-seeded Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) advanced from Pool B despite forfeiting their match against New Zealand’s 26th-seeded Jason Lochhead and Kirk Pitman.
Dalhausser and Rogers are scheduled to play Venezuela’s 35th-ranked Farid Mussa and Jackson Henriquez on Thursday.
Also in Pool B, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Fla.), seeded 23rd, defeated 47th-ranked Morais Abreu and Mario Silva of Angola, 2-0 (21-12, 21-10), giving them a 2-1 record and advancing them to the first round of elimination.
"We’re rested; we’re ready to go,” Rosenthal said. “We’re used to playing three, four matches a day. Now it’s one a day instead of one every other day. This is definitely not a physical challenge as much as a mental one. You always have to stay ready.”
Unfortunately, one U.S. men’s team will be eliminated for sure on Thursday because Gibb and Rosenthal will play Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), ranked 21st, in the Round of 32.
Keenan and Lucena advanced from Pool D with a 2-1 record thanks to an injury forfeit on Tuesday by Brazil’s fourth-seeded Pedro Cunha and Pedro Salgado.
Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.), ranked 17th, also advanced from Pool H in spite of forfeiting their final pool play match on Wednesday to eighth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of Netherlands.
In the women’s bracket, Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.), ranked fourth, went 3-0 in Pool D with a 2-0 (21-12, 21-17) victory over 21st-seeded Geeske Banck and Anja Gunther of Germany. The U.S. team has not dropped a set.
“My legs felt the best they have all week,” Youngs said. “I think it’s important to have a good match now, going into single elimination, where it’s point by point. We just want to continue: up, up, up.''
Branagh and Youngs will play 26th-ranked Danielle Remmers and Michelle Stiekema of Netherlands on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, top-ranked Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), who won Pool A on Tuesday, will play 37th-seeded Svitlana Baburina and Galyna Osheyko of Ukraine.
Sixth-seeded Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.), who won Pool F on Tuesday, will face 28th-seeded Marie-Andrée Lessard and Annie Martin of Canada.
Matches can be seen live at Universal Sports.
