U.S. Beach Teams Win Challenge Matches in Brazil

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 20, 2009) – U.S. Olympic beach volleyball teams of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers and Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs defeated teams from Brazil in challenge matches played Jan. 17-18 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On Jan. 17, Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), winners of the 2008 Olympic gold medal, defeated Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos, the 2004 gold medalists and 2008 bronze medalists, 21-19, 21-15.

Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) defeated Renata Ribieiro and Talita Rocha, the team that finished fourth at the 2008 Olympic Games, 21-14, 23-21.

On Jan. 18, a mixed team from the United States that included all four players defeated Brazil, 2-1 (21-17, 17-21, 18-16).
