COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 2, 2009) – USA Volleyball's High Performance Department has announced the 19 players and three alternates that will vie to be on the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team for the 2009 FIVB World Championship on July 31-Aug. 9 in Pune, India.

The training period and logistical plans for the Men’s Junior National Training Team are not yet finalized.

The head coach of the team will be Shawn Patchell, the head coach of the BYU men’s volleyball team. He will be assisted by John Hawks, an assistant coach for Long Beach State’s men’s volleyball team.

Patchell coached the United States to the bronze medal at the 2008 NORCECA Continental Men’s Junior Championship in San Salvador, El Salvador behind Cuba (gold) and Canada (silver).

"The selection process was an arduous one with so many sound volleyball players trying out," Patchell said. "Most of the athletes picked have been competing against each other all season in the NCAA, so it will be exciting to get everyone in the same gym to train again.

"This is the last summer this group has to compete together in the Junior program so we want to make the most of it."

Eight players from that team are on the 2009 Men’s Junior National Training Team roster: Kyle Caldwell (Newport Beach, Calif.), Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif.), Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif.), Joe Kauliakamoa (Las Vegas, Nev.), Brad Lawson (Honolulu, Hawai’i), Erik Shoji (Honolulu, Hawai’i), Joe Sunder (Greensburg, Pa.) and Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.).

Tri Bourne (Honolulu, Hawai’i) and Austin Ellis (Corona del Mar, Calif.), who were on the 2008 team, are alternates to the 2009 team.

The Southern California Region put eight players on the team. Northern California has three players. The Aloha and Keystone regions each have two players on the team.
